Has anyone tried the Ortho tempered memory foam mattress?  I was at Ortho mattress today and the store is selling 9" foams for $999 and 12" for $1499, compare to Tempur pedic's rhapsody 12" at $2699.  I tried looking for the review but there just isn't much info I can find on the web.  I just can't tell the difference by lying on it for 5 mins with the saleperson breathing down my neck.  Quite frustrated buying a mattress...
please help!

Is this the mattress?

They offer no clue about the construction, other than it's made with "Viscoelastic." I don't know why they capitalize viscoelastic, it's not a brand name but rather a  description of a physical property of the foam - the foam is viscoelastic. Big deal, at least 12 companies manufacture visco foam in the U.S. alone. Lord knows how many Chinese companies are making it.

The price is certainly nice, but ask about the support foam, the density in particular. If it's 1.6 lb polyurethane, it won't last vary long. Some companies call this "high density" but it's not. PU foam has to be 2 lb density or higher before it can legitimately be called "high density." There are mattresses selling for even less that use better foam than that. Even Bedinabox uses better quality support foam.

Don't fall for the line "It's just as good as a Tempur-Pedic for one third the price." No it isn't. It still might be worth $999, but keep your expectations grounded in reality. Tempur-Pedic uses 5.3 lb memory foam that's expensive to manufacture. You don't even know where Ortho buys their memory foam. And Tempur-Pedic also uses a good quality support form, in the 3.0 lb range if what I have read is to be believed. TP's prices are wildly inflated because of the $millions they spend in advertising, but it's still a high quality mattress.

If you like the mattress, stick with the 9" unless you weigh over 250 lbs. The extra $500 buys you 3" of "filler".

thanks!!

That is the correct link for the mattress I saw.  It has no specs, no info at all.

I am 6' and I weight about 180lbs.  My partner likes the HD on the rhapsody a lot but is it worth the extra 700 bucks on top of the regular 9" or 10" TP has to offer?

We have had three tempurpedic's in the past months. The first, classic we had collapsed after 6 years. They then replaced it in september, and the smell was intollerable even though we aired it on the lanai for a week. Within a month it had serious depressions, my husband is big, but even on my side(180 lb). They then replaced it when the depressions got to be 3/4 inch and were very good about it. Since we thought it might be our Hawaiian humidity, we aired this replacement for a month under dehumidifcation and airing( the smell was overpowering) and it collased after three weeks. They finally gave us our money bach and we are trying latex. So any way you want to go, the thing is going to stink for weeks and with the latx I now feel I can breathe again.
