Overstock Sensus memory foam review

There was a thread about Overstock and in it there was a mention that somebody bought the Sensus and thought it was nice.  So I gave it a try.

I ordered the 1" Sensus king.  As a background I have owned authentic Sensus in the past, but in 3" thickness.

In my opinion, the Sensus seems real.  Also, the size seems correct for a king bed, not undersized like the website description states.  Although I haven't measured it, but it is laying on top of my king bed and it does not look small.

I haven't slept on it yet.  There is an odor, but with the window open it seems to be disappating.  I'll check on it later.

I just thought that I would share my experience.

Thanks Jim. Please keep us posted. I am interested in a 1" MF topper for my wife's half of the bed, or possibly even for the entire king. I was thinking of taking a chance with the OS "Venus" topper, returning it if it turned out to be bogus. But, if the Sensus topper turns out to be of high quality and sufficient firmness, I might consider it instead, at about half the price.

Can you describe the attributes of "authentic" Sensus, and why you feel this is genuine? Also, what type of bed  are you using it on, and how is it working with it? (I realize it's pretty early. But, your first impressions are OK.)

Thanks.

Authentic Sensus:  Pink, very heavy, smooth feel when you glide your hand over the surface, slow recovery, very durable.

So I aired it out for a few hours on top of my bed, then flipped it over and aired it out for a few more hours.  By then it seemed like the odor was gone.  I placed a sheet over the Sensus and slept almost directly on it that way.  90+% of the shape was recovered by this time.

I was amazed at how much difference in feel 1" made.  There is an initial softness when laying down, and as you lie there the foam warms up with your body temperature and softens further, conforming to your body shape.  It is a pleasant feeling.  However at 1" thick it is not difficult to change positions if you desire.  I felt the need to change positions less with the Sensus there.

Overall I'm very pleased.  I loved my 3" Sensus years ago, but that was too thick for me.  1" seems to be enough for me.  If I want more of a comfort layer in the future I will add 1" of 14ILD talalay directly below the Sensus.  I think that if I did that, I would remove my 2" of 32ILD talalay from the bed.

Tonight I'm going to try placing the Sensus on the 36ILD talalay layer and see how that feels.

For your reference my bed is all latex below the memory foam, on top of a wood slat platform.

The UPS package said 19 lbs. which makes sense according to the math.  78 x 80 x 1=6240  12 x 12 x 12=1728  6240/1728=3.61  3.61 x 5=18.05 plus the cardboard box & plastic wrap.

Thanks again, Jim. Very helpful information re Sensus foam, as I just received what I thought was a Sensus neck pillow, and am thinking of purchasing the 1" Sensus topper from OS.

From your description, it sounds like my pillow is not Sensus, as it is more of a peach color than Pink. And, while it feels better than most of the retail foam pillows I've felt at Costco, Target, etc, it is still pretty far from the density and quality of the TP foam in my wife's pillow. (Have you ever compared Sensus to true TP foam, btw?)

It also sounds like the Sensus topper may be too soft for my needs. OTOH, it may be just what we need. (Actually, my wife is happy with her half as it is. But, I will need something on her half to raise it up an inch to match whatever I do with my side. I'm worried the Sensus may be too soft for her.)

I am now trying to decide whether to go with what seems to be genuine 5lb Sensus vs what may be bogus 8lb "Venus" that is no better than 4 or 5lb foam or may actually be 8lb Aerus or some other 8lb foam, which would be fine as long as it's 8lb. It's just a matter of going with a sure good thing or gambling on what might be a great thing or might be BS.

Sensus turns a peachy type color when exposed to sunlight.

I have not compared it to TP foam in any meaningful way.  I had a little piece of TP that they mailed to my Sister as a sample.  It seemed similar in quality.

Besides durability, the density of the foam shouldn't be a decision factor for feel as far as I know.  You can have very dense and soft foam, and very light but firm foam.  ILD should be the focus with density the durability factor.

If you want something firmer that will last longer you should pick up some Latex International blended talalay in the ILD that you desire.

Good luck in your quest.

Thanks for the advice. But, I'm pretty sure latex pillows are not in my future, based upon the three I have already tried.

And, actually, my wife kinda likes this "Sensus" pillow. So, I may just swap with her TP. But, I will probably have to raise it a hair by adding a layer of foam to the bottom.

But, first, I will try sleeping on it tonight, now that it's aired out, and lost most of its odor. It may be good enough.

1" of Sensus directly on the 36 ILD latex was not as nice.  I'm going to try folding over and seeing how 2" feels tonight.

garypen, I was referring to the 1" layer you need for your mattress, not your pillow choice in the prior post.

I can see where 1" of Sensus above 36 ILD latex may not feel so good. Our configuration was bought when Mark (Batman) was still associated with memoryfoam.com. We started with  3" 36 ILD talalay,  3" 28 ILD talalay, and 3" Sensus. After about a year I decided it should be firmer so we purchased a 3" 44 ILD talalay and that made a big difference in giving the bed more firmness and stability while retaining the excellent comfort. My wife and I are not on the lighter side. I don't know your weight or particular sleep preferences, but I would think that a transition from a 1" Sensus comfort layer to a 36 ILD latex layer might not be the most comfortable. Hopefully 2" of Sensus  will make a nice difference.

I think probably  too sharp of a contrast.  1" of fairly soft on pretty firm 36 would not work for me either.  2" (folded over) might be interesting, but having something like 20-32ILD in between probably would probably be a good way to go.

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were commenting on the Sensus pillow I had described.

Actually, I already have a 1" soft talalay latex topper on my side of the bed. (That's on top of a TP Bellafina mattress, which is 3" of 5lb tempur MF over 3" of "tempur-flex" latex over 4" of firm PU.) It's OK. I was thinking of trying an inch of MF instead.

I purchased my original 3" Sensus from Batman also.

The 2" folded over on the 36 ILD was not good either.  So I have determined that Sensus feels best when used above a medium ILD layer.  Of the two mediums I have, one is 32 ILD and one is about 26 ILD  I think the 1" felt better over the 26 ILD.  I'll go back to that configuration tonight.
