pillowtop mattress surgery?

I'm curious if anyone has bought a pillowtop and tried replacing the PU foam on top when it gives out and able to extend the life of the mattress that way. I understand it's the cushy PU in the top layer that causes problesm when it breaks down. Maybe that would be an option? PU foam is inexpensive. Course, you'd have to cut off the pretty cover, but it might be worth it. How quickly does it break down? How frequently would it have to be replaced, assuming this woud work?

Thanks, DoreenA! I had seen some of those, but did not realize any of them were performed on former pillowtops. What about the underlying springs on those mattresses? Are they decent and do they hold up - and for how long, typically?
