PU foam as core - is this one Ok?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, but I have been lurking here for a while.

I was wondering the use of PU foam as a core of the mattress, which will be topped with either latex or memory foam. (maybe going memory foam for a Tempur clone). I'm changing bed size, so I cannot re-use my old mattress.

I'm 5'8, broad shouldres, small waist, 175lbs side sleeper.

Since I live outside of the USA and there is no foam supplier in my town it makes the ordering by the internet close to useless (the shipping and handling would be very expensive - this option is out). I was wondering if the IKEA Favang (FÅVANG) would be ok for a core (there is an ikea somewhat close to where I live).

Firmness: Firm.

Ticking: 68 % cotton, 32 % polyester
Comfort material: High-resilience polyurethane foam (cold foam) 2.2 lb/cu.ft., Polyester wadding
Protective fabric: Non-woven polypropylene
Length: 79 1/2 "
Width: 59 7/8 "
Thickness: 5 1/2 "

US price: 300$.

if i use a latex or memory foam topper with it, would it be ok?
would this mattress as a core, be similar to tempurpedic core?

I also tried the IKEA latex mattresses
the Eugenes, I found that is was very soft.

the erfjord the most expensive ikea mattress was ok.
i wasn't sure if it was too soft or not. at that price, i don't think i could afford a topper.

I was not able to try the ELSFJORD since the store doesn't physically carry it but can order it, it is a lot cheaper price wise than the other one and supposedly firmer. It might be too hard for me, but at 500$, i could buy a topper to supplement it.
5 1/2"
5 comfort zones
Ticking: 68 % cotton, 32 % polyester
Comfort material: Synthetic latex, Polyester/viscose (rayon) fiber wadding, Polyester wadding
Protective fabric: Non-woven polypropylene
Fire-retardant interliner: 100 % cotton

any input would be welcome.
Thank you.

Dott--

i made a DIY mattress that has a PU foam core (see my thread 'i love my bed'), and i love it. The core is 2.8 lb density; the bed you're looking at with a 2.2 lb density is a little low, and might wear out sooner than you want. That said, it is better than the 1.8 lb density that is found in so many major manufacturers' beds.

The other bed (latex) that you're looking at might be good--especially as it's a 'firm' model--and, as you say, you can always get toppers for it.

Let us know what you decide!

Unless you really can't find anything better for your price, I'd avoid the IKEA SYNTHETIC latex. Synthetic latex just doesn't seem to get high marks.

If you can't do mail order and can't find any better HR foam like Electracat's, then the IKEA HR foam would be your best bet for the money, I think, then you could put some soft latex on top of it.

I am anti-memory foam. I know some do like it, but it seems to me that more don't. It off-gasses chemicals, it gets softer and softer in just a short time (too soft to provide good support), and is just generally not as good as natural latex, imho.

Get some kind of HR or HD foam base, then put one inch of medium and one inch of soft natural latex on top. Finding the latex toppers may be hard if you can't do mail order, but look around. Can you find a foam distributor or furniture factory? Sometimes they can get it, if they're willing.Maybe ask IKEA if they can order any Talalay or Natural latex of some sort?
