My husband and I recently replaced our old innerspring mattress, and based largely on reviews found on this forum, we decided to go with latex. After comparing and contrasting the different options out there, we decided to go with a Flobeds vZone with a euro slat foundation. Two and a half months into our trial period (we have about a week and a half left), I have decided the thing has to go. Dewey has been fantastic working with me to try to make this thing work, but there is just too much going on. I'm a side-sleeper, and so prefer a softer feel. But with latex, I'm finding I sink in too much (hammocking) if it's too soft, and wake up in pain if it's too firm. I think that whole push-back thing is just too much for me. I like to be cradled/nest in when I sleep, and latex is not allowing that sensation. :) I'm just not finding that happy balance between comfort and support. The closest I came was medium/medium/medium vZone with the zones swapped around a bit (top to bottom) and the euro slats configured with just one adjuster under my hips, ribcage, and lumbar region. I can sleep on that, which is more than I can say for any other configuration I have tried, but it's not comfortable, and if I move even the slightest up or down off "the spot" where everything lines up correctly, I wake up hurting. I'm just so tired of messing with the thing, and so am sending it back before we run out of trial days. I have decided I need something simple . . . something that doesn't require swapping layers around or messing with slats to get the right "feel" and something that allows me to just flop down on it anywhere without having to find and stay on "the spot." Anyway, this leaves us with the dilemma of finding a new mattress fairly quickly. I would really rather not go with an innerspring mattress, although I will do that if nothing else works. And I have been so put off by latex with my Flobeds experience that I just don't even want to go there (and yes, I have tried it without the vZone layer and the euro slats . . . those configurations were even worse than with - I don't get the support I need without the euro slats, and don't have enough pressure point relief without the soft layers under my hips and shoulders with the vZone - an all soft layer anywhere in the mattress allows cratering). I'm now seriously considering wool, but because I can't return it once I've tried it out, and have no way of "testing" one out in a store, I want to get as much information as possible first. I thought I would ask here . . . has anyone slept on an all wool mattress before? I am coming up empty searching the forums . . . if there is a post on it, it's well buried. Even if all you have tried is a wool topper, please chime in with what the experience is like. All I have been able to find is on the websites of the manufacturers who make wool mattresses, and those aren't exactly unbiased. They all seem to boast wool's amazing ability to allow you to "nest" into it (superior pressure point relief) while also supporting your body/distributing your weight up and away from pressure points. I don't know if that makes any sense at all. I can't say it nearly as well as they can. :) Also, since it's more breathable than latex or memory foam, you don't wake up hot, yet it keeps you warm during winter. Anyway, I just want to know if their claims are true. I've already ordered a topper, so I guess I could just wait and see . . . but the latex mattress will be long gone before I even get the topper, and I'd rather not be without a mattress to sleep on for longer than absolutely necessary. |
| I ordered an Ultimate Soothe Ewe organic wool topper from Surround Ewe. They make your order by hand as soon as they receive it, so it takes 2-3 weeks before you receive it. But I ordered a week ago, so I should be getting it within the next week or two. As soon as I have a chance to give it a decent try, I'll post an update. |

I had been thinking along that line after having some kind of issue with a Greensleep latex/innerspring combo (note: 'the' most comfortable bed I ever slept on . . . very good support and very comfortable for my aching back, however there was some response I had to it . . . a response that was confirmed not to be a latex allergy). Came very close to pulling the plug on a Shepher'd Dream mattress, that aided by the fact that a family member informed me that the mattresses that we slept on in our youth were hand-me-down tufted wool mattresses. But similiar to yourself, I wasn't ready to toss money and suddenly (for example) find myself with something more akin to a futon. So I went with a Sleeptek wool/innerspring. I'm interested where this thread may go. There is a second smaller bed in this house that needs replacement and the wool option may be able to serve that well. |
