| I have been researching the past months for a memory foam mattress after sleeping for a week on the tempupedic rhapsody which i liked very much....i'd like 4" of 5+lb memory foam on top of 8" of strong support foam...i'm a big guy (5'11", 250#).... i have to admit i don't want to pay the $$ for a TP but will if i have to.....i have been through this forum several times and am more undecided than ever as to which way to go...i am considering everything from the TP to bobopedic to costco (novaform, sleep science) to the big S', to walmart, to the marriot bed, FBM, OVM, BAB, etc, etc......that said, i have come across Atlantic Beds and they seem to be the closest to the TP and was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with them or knows of someone who has experience with them....or if you can offer any other advice, (and confuse me even more...lol) i would greatly appreciate it...thanks! |

I've never seen any MF truly mimic tempur. If you like tempur and its compatible with you, my opinion is that you invest in that. It sure would be a shame for you to spend lots of time and money trying to replicate a tempur and never quite getting there. Foam is fairly expensive stuff, even from discounters like FBM. I would really like to hear from anyone who owns a tempur AND has tried to achieve the same feel and performance using non-tempur MF. |
| thanks.....thats probably what i will end up doing...going with what i tried, the tempurpedic....any thoughts as to whether i should buy it directly from TP or at a place like sleepy's? the only benefit from buying it from sleepy's is that they are offering 0% financing and they are local to me. |
| after much thought and research, i decided to go with costco and their novaform pure comfort deluxe queen. costco's return policy is awesome so i figured i have nothing to lose...as much as i would have loved to get the TP, i figured i'd give this a try first at a fraction of the price.....its only been 3 nights of sleeping on it but so far i am very pleased.... |

I'm unfamiliar with Costco's return policy but once you get near the end of it you'll want to be very sure of your purchase. One of the bigger differences between inexpensive memory foams and the industry leaders is something called "consistent density". In a nutshell this is how it works: Memory foam, like all foam, is a porous substance. It's like a sponge, comprised of a bunch of little holes. In inexpensive memory foam if you look at it underneath a microscope you see that some parts of the foam have big holes while others have smaller holes. Some parts have lots of holes where other parts have fewer. Over time, the parts of the foam with bigger holes or more holes will sink in where the parts with fewer holes or smaller holes will lump up. This is called an inconsistent density. It means if you take a cube from one part of the mattress and compare the density with a cube from another part there's some variance. Very good industry leading memory foams look closer to beehive or grid patterns where the consistency is even. The process to make it this way is much more expensive and is a good chunk of the difference between a memory foam bed for $600 and one for $3000. Tempurpedics are also the only memory foam mattresses out there that are tempurature sensitive. (They soften under warmth and firm under coolness) So while it's possible to get the memory foam feel until someone cracks the Tempurpedic formula, at the very least no other mattress will conform to your body tempurature as well as your shape and weight. |

If you like the TempurPedic, but don't want to pay the price, I suggest looking at Craig's list. I did and was surprised by the number of people selling their TempurPedic beds at a fraction of the cost after a very short ownership. I think some people buy them and then discover that the Tempur foam is not for them. If I were going TempurPedic (which I'm not) this is how I'd buy it. |

If you do the Craig's list thing just remember that used mattresses are considered Biohazardous material for a good reason.  That said, half of the current models of Tempurpedic have removable, washable covers. Couple that with the fact that Tempur Material is naturally dust mite resilient and your chances aren't horrible. its been more than a month and i am LOVING this mattress!! i paid $550 for the queen and also bought a versaflex foundation for $200,,,, so for a total of $750 i am sleeping soundly and not waking up with aches and pains and feeling like an old man like i was on my expensive coil spring mattress.... highly recommend!! i will continue to give periodic updates..... this forum is great!! |
