I have been reading this Forum for a few weeks now, and just decided to join in today. My wife and I are thin. I am 5'11" 150lbs, and my wife is 5'6" 110lbs with a tiny waist. We are both primarily side sleepers. I am making a DIY Queen mattress and this was my starting design: 2" 14ILD (Pure Latex Bliss Topper) 1" 20ILD (FBM) 3" 28ILD (Rejuvinite Firm Topper) 5.5" 32-32-32ILD Medium-Firm Dunlop 3-Zone Core (Latexco Durolux) I figured I would start there and probably make any necessary adjustments in the 1" layer, either by replacing it, adding to it, or moving it. I know it is a lot of latex, but we like the look of a tall bed and did not want to achieve that by using Poly at the bottom since that was what we were getting away from. Upon delivery, I ended up with this: 1-5/8" 14ILD 1" 24-26ILD 3" 28ILD 5.5" "25ILD Medium" Dunlop 3-Zone Core (don't know the actual ILDs of the zones) The 2" topper was actually 1-5/8" without the cover. The FBM foam seems firmer than 20ILD and from my "testing" it appears to be in the 24-26ILD range. And, I was mistakenly shipped the wrong core, however the supplier, Arizona Mattress, has told me it would be corrected if I didn't like the one I received. I seem to have gotten pretty close on the first try. Other than slight shoulder pressure, we sleep well with it this way. I tried doubling the 14 on her side and doubling the 24-26 on my side for two nights. She thought it was "heaven", however I have my doubts on whether a lack-of-support problem would show up over some time. For me, it was way too firm. The second morning I was hurting quite a bit. So now I have ordered a 1" 20-22ILD Radium piece from SleepEZ which will be in tomorrow. I am hoping I can do a little of my own zoning in the comfort layers to ease the shoulder pressure of the original design. So after all of this background info, my question is: Should I exchange the Med core for the Med-Firm 32-36-32 I ordered? Would we even notice a difference at our weights with so much latex above it? If we wouldn't feel it, shouldn't I swap it just for the sake of durability? Or, don't fix it if it ain't broke? Also, does anyone have any success/failure stories on zoning for relieving shoulder pressure? I have seen where people have done it or bought it that way through Custom Sleep Designs, but I have not seen where they ever come back and give feedback on the results. Maybe it was so comfortable that they are still sleeping? LOL |
My personal experience tells me that swapping support layer doesn't really make any difference especially with your IDLs, so if it works for you I would keep things as is. |
