Any suggestions on what can be salvaged from an old pillow top serta (both sides?).  It is a ten year old king, with 2 inches of memory foam in the pillow top of each side.  I would like to break it down to dispose of, but is there any reason to keep any of the old PU or memory foam to re-use for projects and such.  Once opened up, what type of mess will I have or problems breaking it down to trashcan size?   I also have the twinXL box springs to break down also.   If I can save some of the fabric, I will re-cover some old step stools with it.

The County will pick up mattresses in our area if you call a special phone number for pickup.

I didn't want the mattress sitting on the curb for a week or two, so I cut up the last full size mattresses I tossed. It's a messy job. Lot's of lint, etc fluffing off. I used bolt cutters to cut through the springs and make it into 4 pieces that the regular trash guys tossed without complaint.
