I'm about to lose my mind in a mattress search. I'm a bigger guy 6 feet tall 240lbs. (trying to lose some weight but thats a discussion for another time). I've always been a tosser and turner in my sleep so its hard to say if I distinctly sleep one way or another. Sometimes I sleep on my back, sometimes on my side, sometimes on my belly. I usually wake up sleeping on my back. I've had a lot of problems with insomnia and have slept on traditional spring mattress practically all of my life until a big move has me sleeping on a air mattress at the moment. I'm looking to spend about $800 to $1000 max on a latex/memory foam and maybe a foundation. a Little more or less isn't necessarily a deal break. I need to start getting some quality sleep.
I need some ideas about what others have put together. I've thought about going the foam by mail route. I'd really appreciate some input into what others have bought maybe even some links if availible. Describing what choices others have made. I do know I have found the memory foam and latex mattress I've tried at the stores to be much more comfortable than the traditional spring matresses. I do worry abit about Mem foam as I'm already abi tof a hot sleeper. Any input or ideas wouldbe greatly appreciated |
| I can't get past the made in China, it could have (Costco latex) additives like clay (I read too much on the internet). Pretty soon I won't be able to buy anything anymore because I refused to buy something I sleep on made in China, or even shoes I refuse.... I did have to buy a pillow protector and a blanket made in China however. |

If you look back about a week, Electracat posted about an mattress he put together from regular high-grade poly foam that was very comfortable. I think it may have had a latex topper - I can't remember. But if you can't find it, I linked to it in my Highlighted Thread for choosing a mattress, under the HR foam section. I think it cost around $1000. |

I put a really comfy Queen size 100% Natural Talalay Latex 8" mattress together for under $1,000: 2" Medium Plush topper, 24 ILD from RockyMountainMattress.com, $199 3" Medium Firm, 32 ILD from RMM, $304 3" Extra Firm, 35-42 ILD from FoamSweetFoam.com, $400 Zippered terry cloth mattress cover from FoamByMail.com, $65 I didn't buy a foundation, I was able to use my S bed box spring which was in good condition.

| Narnia's idea is a very budget friendly way to get an all latex mattress. However, for anyone over 200 lbs I would suggest another 2-3 inches of latex......maybe another 3 inch layer of "firm" in the middle. My first latex mattress was 8 inches and I was bottoming out at the hips when laying on my side or back. (I weigh 250 lbs). I added a 3 inch medium topper from FoamSweetFoam and it's perfect now. Just my thoughts..... |

If I buy the Terry Cloth cover how many inches of Laxtex will it hold. Not sure how think it is..
Also, when building a mattress using layers of latex. How do you keep the latex lined up properly do you glue it together?

Thanks Don't worry about the latex staying together. The weight and friction alone keeps them together. If you put in a mattress cover, that will provide further support. |
