Belive it or not, after months here and years at the mattress hunt, ( )I just tracked down the thread that linked the four or five detailed "surgeries" by JImsocal, Sandman, and others.. and am about to take the plunge. I have been all over the board with latex and memory, and am now convinced that my problem iies between the top of the springs and the top cover of the mattress... where the evil stuff lurks! Thanks for all the valuable information. Just must do the surgery when my wife isn't looking over my shoulder! Here is my question: I have a firm Serta Perfect Sleeper Auburn Firm (continuous coil) .. but can pick up a firm Beautyrest for peanuts on craigslist. I am inclined to pick up the firm Beautyrest because up till this (ouch) firm Serta (which I might sell for more than picking up the Simmons).... I have slept on Beautyrest mattresses for all my adult life and only started with the problems when I bought a too firm mattress to accommodate my wife. I am guessing that I should experiment with the inexpensive Beautyrest as a base.. that it migh be in line with my previous positive experiences. Or do you think that when I get the hard surface layer off the Serta Auburn Firm that I am expecting (like a layer of carpet from Carpets of Dalton...) ... that the Serta will be ok? I already have a huge inventory of latex, pseudo memory, convoluted, etc. and just have to "stack it up." PS. Will be sleeping on the "Hybrid" 2" topper from Walmart tonight. It feels pretty good.. but to we optimists, they all feel better than what we have now.. till we sleep on them.

Sandman: Thanks for the insight. I am hunting a Simmons BR on craigslist and will buy and whack on that first.. taking assuming, like you, that it is what I have liked in the past, but that the pocketed coils may want to walk or lie down. If the BR surgery goes badly, I still have the interlinked Serta. I found on www.usmattress.com that the firm lower priced Simmons BR have 13 gauge coils, and softer versions typically have 15 gauge coils. A few years ago, I tried and " threw back" a couple of BR "classic' firm mattresses early in my search.. before I discovered toppers. That was when I believed "firm must be better for my back". Hopefully, one of those with 13 ga coils and the right stuffing will be my ticket to sleep!! Still the optimist! For Insomaniac, hopefully this link will get you to the top of the page where the links to all these fine folks's surgery details are. Page down a bit and should be right there. It was an odd material. It looked and felt more like poly foam that was doped with memory foam.. didn't really look or feel aything like latex. If felt like firm poly foam with eggcrate.. and approx. 20-24 ILD in firmness. Basically... yuk.... and already returned at local walmart for refund of all except shipping. Sandman, Just reread your reply, thanks. I have been experimenting with guest bedroom so my bride has her own bed for now. We both snore, so this has been a mixed blessing! When I get this sorted out, I think she might prefer. I am betting that a simmons with encased ring of outer coils, like this Serta, will be an OK canididate for surgery, and I may hunt one down cheap just to try. The foam encasement of the coils around this one make a nice structural box for the spring system. In a beautyrest surgery, it might make sense to tack glue the half inch layer of protection foam to the top of the circumference to make the springs a unit. They must hold them in place some way, anyway. |
