Handmade mattresses
| A while back one of the posters, Eagle maybe(?), mentioned a mattress company that handmakes a quality innerspring mattress at a very reasonable cost. I've tried the search here, but so many results come back. Anyone know the name of the company (or companies) that make quality innerspring mattresses? |

I don't think a Gardner is any much more handmade than a normal bed, but I will say it looks like good materials used for the price. Basically all mattresses in the world have some aspects of their construction that are done by hand. I would say to call a mattress legitimately hand made then the fillings have to be sorted by hand, the coils have to be stitched together by hand and the upholstery has to be hand tufted. When its all said and done....none of them will be inexpensive...not to say they wouldn't be reasonable. Some mattress companies that fit most of those descriptions (other than hand tied coils) - McRoskey, SleepTek (tufted innerspring mattress), Royal-Pedic, Green Sleep (pocket coil ones are stitched together rather than using glue). I believe the most aggressively priced out of this category is the SleepTek Innerspring mattress although it is basically in one comfort that could only be described as firm...there are actually a few companies that sell these under their own private labelling as well. Fully blown hand made beds would be Vi-Spring, Hastens, and some of the higher end Hypnos beds. These are all typically speaking a whole other price category above the aforementioned brands. | Check out this thread. I think Kait has mentioned "Better Bed" in Fresno before and Electrocat mentions Omaha Bedding company. Usually they are small regional companies, so not sure if they could ship or take returns. |

You might check for local mattress manufacturers. In Oklahoma City there are still several. They make "old fashioned" mattresses at very reasonable prices. Three firmnesses are available - all are fairly firm. Mattresses contain bonnell springs with cotton (no foam) covered by cotton ticking with hand tufting and are sold with real box spring units. These last a very long time and do not sag. These independent mattress companies also make and sell latex beds, and latex and memory foam toppers and pillows. | agree. lots of local mattress makers. just check your yellow pages. gardner would not be my first choice, as their full size mattress only has 250 coils. I would want around 400, and preferably the holland maid brand. ask your local mattress company if they are willing to order that for you. it is like 90 dollars for the coil system if it can be shipped rolled up. the mattress maker can assemble the edge rails as they put it together. |

| It would actually depend on your location. There are mattresses available at Amazon and you'll get wide array of them there if you wanted it online. Or you can have them purchased here. |

Definitely go local. I go to Better Bed in Fresno. I have developed a rapport with Bill(owner) as well as the actual guys who make the beds, LOL! Not that I've been there a lot or anything... Kait |
