Hey everyone, Buying a new bed has to be one of the most annoying purchases around. I have spent so much time trying to gather info and I just can't get a real consensus on anything. I was set in my mind to buy a plush pillowtop king mattress. I went to Sleep Country Canada and put down a deposit on a Simmons Beautyrest Classic High Loft Pillowtop with Wool and Memory Foam. It feels wonderful in the store and I'm sick of sleeping on firm surfaces at home and my back is killing. But now I've been to a ton of other stores and talked to a lot of sales people and have been reading reviews on the internet and it seems that a lot of actual buyers who have had their pillowtops for more than a few years hate them now and say they sink and have major indents that won't go back to normal. My old mattress which is now 11 years old is just a plain Kingsdown that has served me well. No pillowtop, no fancy cushioning just a regular old flippable mattress. This is no small dollar amount purchase so now I feel like I'm going crazy and I just can't make a decision! I've even wondered if I just get a regular tight top mattress and put a foam mattress topper on it for that soft feel, instead of dealing with a crappy pillowtop 5 years down the road. PLEASE HELP! In the USA, you have three business days to cancel an contract so see what your rights in Canada are to see if you can get out of bed purchase until you are sure what you want. |
3 days to return something would be a State law in the US. It's certainly not true in my state - even for a car, as one of my roommates found out.
As to your question, after wasting a large amount of money on a top of the line S&F I would never buy a pillow top mattress again. That comfy feeling leads to body depressions is a few short years. If I was going the innerspring route I would buy a good spring set with minimal padding - and then add a topper to add a bit of softness.
Either that, or tell myself that a mattress is more of a 3-5 year purchase, not a 10-15 year investment as I used to believe. This message was modified Apr 21, 2010 by twalkman

well you have a couple of options. you can always try to just change the bed into a tight top and then do an additional topper to get the feel you like. you could consider spending a lot more money and then get a bed which will not only be comfortable but durable as well (perhaps an all latex mattress). OR.... Worst case scenario....if you call Sleep Country to cancel your order I can almost guarantee they will drop their price even further to keep you as a customer. This is actually the best way to get a deal from them...put a deposit down, and then a few days or a week later threaten to cancel. Works pretty well for some people. Actually it seems like the top advice for dealing with Sleep Country over at redflagdeals.com (Canadian bargain hunter website/forum) |
Three years ago I bought my daughter a Simmons mattress - I don't remember the model, but it was plush. Last year it developed a giant crater in the middle where the cheap foam has broken down. Lucky for me she's young and the crater doesn't bother her. But it's an undeniable fact that the cheap materials in the mattress didn't last more than two years. I'll never buy another Simmons or any of the "S" brand mattresses again. |
What is your reason for abandoning your current Kingsdown? Have the springs worn out or are you just tired of the firmer feel is has. If it is the latter, and the bed is still in good shape, consider putting a topper on it and see if that gives you what you need before buying a new mattress. The memory foam topper at Costco is completely returnable (altho it off-gasses something terrible), so you could experiment without $ at risk. Just a thought. Diane |
Very hard to believe that you have actually made a worthwhile effort to research previous forum contributions. Even reading one page of topics should reflect that there is NO CONSENSUS! Mattress selection is almost always a personal preference trial & error process. |
Thanks everyone for your feedback. DianeK my Kingsdown is 11 years old and is totally worn out and the springs have lost their support. The bed is sagging like crazy and its pretty much done. I decided to go ahead with my original decision to purchase the Simmons bed at Sleep Country. I'm a very tired stay at home mother of two babies and I just can't give this any more of my energy. I've spent weeks at bed stores, lying on every kind of bed, talking to sales people and researching on the internet. I really liked the bed in the store and if it only lasts 5 years than so be it. I'll never know unless I try it out for myself. Thanks again! |
Hope it all works out. Remember, if in the future your Simmons starts to develop a dip because the comfort materials are compressing, you can always do mattress-surgery as others here have. You just cut open the mattress, remove all the failing foam and fibres, and replace them with a latex or memory foam topper. All the best. Diane |
