Help me PLEASE, I'm going crazy with all this bed research!

Hey everyone,

Buying a new bed has to be one of the most annoying purchases around.  I have spent so much time trying to gather info and I just can't get a real consensus on anything.  I was set in my mind to buy a plush pillowtop king mattress.  I went to Sleep Country Canada and put down a deposit on a Simmons Beautyrest Classic High Loft Pillowtop with Wool and Memory Foam.  It feels wonderful in the store and I'm sick of sleeping on firm surfaces at home and my back is killing.  But now I've been to a ton of other stores and talked to a lot of sales people and have been reading reviews on the internet and it seems that a lot of actual buyers who have had their pillowtops for more than a few years hate them now and say they sink and have major indents that won't go back to normal.  My old mattress which is now 11 years old is just a plain Kingsdown that has served me well.  No pillowtop, no fancy cushioning just a regular old flippable mattress.

This is no small dollar amount purchase so now I feel like I'm going crazy and I just can't make a decision!  I've even wondered if I just get a regular tight top mattress and put a foam mattress topper on it for that soft feel, instead of dealing with a crappy pillowtop 5 years down the road.

PLEASE HELP!

Mel

What is your reason for abandoning your current Kingsdown?  Have the springs worn out or are you just tired of the firmer feel is has.  If it is the latter, and the bed is still in good shape, consider putting a topper on it and see if that gives you what you need before buying a new mattress.  The memory foam topper at Costco is completely returnable (altho it off-gasses something terrible), so you could experiment without $ at risk.  Just a thought.

Very hard to believe that you have actually made a worthwhile effort to research previous forum contributions.  Even reading one page of topics should reflect that there is NO CONSENSUS!  Mattress selection is almost always a personal preference trial & error process.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.  DianeK my Kingsdown is 11 years old and is totally worn out and the springs have lost their support.  The bed is sagging like crazy and its pretty much done.

I decided to go ahead with my original decision to purchase the Simmons bed at Sleep Country.  I'm a very tired stay at home mother of two babies and I just can't give this any more of my energy.  I've spent weeks at bed stores, lying on every kind of bed, talking to sales people and researching on the internet.   I really liked the bed in the store and if it only lasts 5 years than so be it.  I'll never know unless I try it out for myself.

Thanks again!

Hope it all works out.  Remember, if in the future your Simmons starts to develop a dip because the comfort materials are compressing, you can always do mattress-surgery as others here have.  You just cut open the mattress, remove all the failing foam and fibres, and replace them with a latex or memory foam topper.  All the best.
