How important is your weight when choosing a memory foam mattress???

Hi

We've just bought a memory foam mattress.  The guy in the shop told us that memory foam is always extremely supportive of the back, and that the firmness didn't matter.  We should choose which mattress we felt comfortable on - firm or soft - and as it was memory foam it would support the body well regardless of our weight.

My wife and I are both very light - around 9 stone - but still went for the firmest mattress because that's what we like.  I am very comfortable on it, but my wife is not sure (it's hard to tell as she wakes many times each night with a crying baby).  But someone else told us that lighter people should go for a softer mattress, else there could be problems with the back.

Is this true?  Should we exchange the mattress to avoid problems later, or is this not true in the case of memory foam.

Thanks

Guy

You don't say which mattress you bought.  Since you say 9 stone I would say it is not in the US, LOL.

How does it feel is most important?  I had a Sealy Truform and in less than 6 months I was in pain.  So foam does break down.  Read the forum, search memory foam mattress.  Some are allegedly better than others.

Don't listen to salesman, yes some are honest, very few though.

Thanks - the brand is Kaymed.  The bed is called Senator, and it is sold by Dreams (not sure if you have these brands/stores in the USA).  Yes we are from the UK.  Why?  Are Americans usually heavier?

For me, the bed feels great - much better for my back than any other bed I have used.  My wife is not sure though - she felt pain for the first few days, but nothing since.  Anyway, it is hard for her to tell, as she is so sleep-deprived with our restless baby at the moment....

Would a very firm memory foam mattress provide back support to light people.  I understand that ordinary firm mattresses would not, but we were led to believe that memory foam was different.  Can you - or anyone - confirm please?

Update - the mattress is a Therapur medium grade firmness (though it feels very firm, and was sold to us as very firm).  The website description of it says "The Senator mattress has a layer of memory foam, which has three posture zones in the head, foot and lumbar areas for additional support. This mattress has an advanced temperature regulating Thermocool cover, which aids a more restful night´s sleep."

It also comes with a 10-year guarentee against losing its shape.

Does this help?

Thanks for the laugh, "Yes we are from the UK.  Why?  Are Americans usually heavier?" Hmmm...... Let me think about that.....Not sure.  But I just wondered since mattresses offered there might not be offered here in US.

Since you already have it try it and if it is returnable after so long return it if it turns out painful.  I haven't heard of that Tempurpedic.  Anyone else?  Since you are young you probably don't have the aches and pains some "mature" adults would have, so maybe you will be fine.
