I am considering purchasing a latex mattress in the near future. I've been doing my homework by researching and visiting several local showrooms to try them. There are two main reasons why I like them: long lasting promise and ecological friendly approach. What I like least is: the high cost of this set. Therefore, I want to make a smart investment with my next purchase. I would really like to hear comments from other savvy buyers (satisfied and non satisfied) who can give me advised in this matter. Any recommendations or considerations I should be looking for? Thank you very much! You can see a comparison of the composition of all of these "S" brand "latex" mattresses on this chart by US Mattress: http://site.namebrandbeds.com/latex-mattress-comparison-chart.html From the description of the mattress you have given, it looks like your mattress is branded on the above chart as the Simmons Natural Care Willowbrook Firm. This mattress is 9 1/2" deep, but only 6" is actually latex. The ILD is 28, which is considered a "medium" firmness in latex. The rest of the mattress is composed of foam base layers and fillers. The issue you ought to be concerned about is how much latex really is in these "latex" mattresses? Some of them are branded as latex mattresses but actually contain very little latex and a lot of PU foam, which is *not* long lasting or durable. Many people have complained about the PU foam layers in these "S" brand mattresses degrading within a very short time, leaving uncomfortable depressions in the bed. If you are interested in purchasing a latex mattress for its durability and eco-friendly approach, you might do better to consider a mattress that is 100% latex rather than a little bit of latex mixed in with a lot of cheap PU foam. For example: http://www.flobeds.com/ http://www.sleeplikeabear.com/ http://www.sleepezbeds.com/ http://www.savvyrest.com/ All these companies sell 100% latex beds, without cheap PU fillers, and all of these companies will allow you to customize your bed by choosing the firmness levels of each latex layer. The Simmons Natural Care Latex bed you reference above has one latex layer of 28 ILD, which is a medium firmness. Some or all of these companies offer the following benefits: 1) If you find the mattress too hard or too soft, you can return individual latex layers and exchange them for other layers that are firmer or softer, depending on the feel you want. 2) A 30 to 90 day "comfort guarantee," and during this time not only can you exchange the latex layers, you can also return the entire mattress for a refund if you don't like it. 3) At least one company, Flobeds, allows you to custom build *each side* of the bed - so, for example, if you are a stomach sleeper and like a firm bed, your side can be firm. If spouse is a side sleeper and needs a softer bed, spouse's side can be softer. Thus you have many more options to achieve a comfortable sleeping arrangement than you do with the "S" brand mattresses that have latex mixed in with PU foam layers. And usually, a better return policy. Eagle and I bought our beds from Flobeds and so far have been very pleased with the mattress and with the customer service. Others on this forum have purchased from Sleepez and Savvyrest, and I believe they have been happy too. You'll notice that the price point for these 100% latex beds are similar to the price you quote for the Natural Care Latex bed by Simmons. I believe they may have free shipping too. Latex is sold in a wide variety of firmnesses, which are measured by their "ILD" (Indentation Load Deflection) and you can see a chart about different ILDs and how firm these ILDs are considered here: http://www.flobeds.com/mattspec.htm It's a bit of a leap of faith to purchase a mattress over the internet, especially one that comes to you in layers of latex which you then have to zip into a mattress cover, but remember, most of these companies offer a money back guarantee. I found my mattress fun to put together, I like the fact that I can customize it to my individual preference, and I'm finding that it is a very high quality product. My husband was dead set against buying a new mattress, he was opposed to purchasing a mattress over the internet from a company he had not heard of. When my latex and mattress cover from Flobeds came he even refused to help me put it together. But now every morning he tells me how enjoyable he finds the new mattress. He really loves it. I tend to agree with Kimberly, that it is nice to have a customizable bed. That way you know what is in it, and you can try different layers to get the right level of support/comfort for you. Ideally you would buy from a place that you can exchange the different layers and/or return the whole thing. It is also nice to have half width layers, so you can try different combinations on each half of the bed. Not sure if they do that in full size though. As a further customization, you can try something different than latex on the top comfort layer, such as memory foam, wool, etc. That will give a different feel as well, so you have many options to get the feel/support you like. Obviously there are so many possibilites that it can drive one crazy. So, best to sample some at a store to narrow down the type of feel you like. I also worry that the foam in the bed you are looking at will not last nearly as long as the latex. Therefore, you may have to get rid of the whole mattress once that gives out. With a customizable bed, you can change out one or more layers later, if it seems to be losing support. |

| Thank you very much for the time you took to inform me about this particular mattress and your guidance towards websites/pages which have been educating me about latex mattresses. This is a very complex and passionate subject and I am totally excited to see which one of the companies I decide to use and purchase my first latex mattress. Therefore, I I don't necessarily like the original bed I was looking to purchase as it appears that it is not completely made out of natural botanical latex material.
