Just Received My New VI-Spring. But Some Questions.

After an 8 week wait, we finally received our VI Spring Tiara Supreme 3 days ago. It is an absolutely gorgeous bed and is incredibly comfortable. We opted for 2 twin XL's to make a king. And they zip together. This is an incredible feature. My side is medium but my wife has a firm. She is thrilled and is raving about it. But I am not as enthusiastic. This bed is soft. Seemingly softer than in the showroom. I fall asleep in two seconds flat and have gotten 3 very good nights sleep. However I have lower back pain upon waking. I am a side sleeper and feel that my hip sinks into the bed a drop too much causing my body to make a slight "V" shape if that makes sense. I believe this is the cause of my discomfort. I called VI Spring directly to discuss this and they were very eager to help. They told me that there is so much filling in a bed like this that it will go through a settling period and the feeling will change quite a bit. That given time this problem will likely go away. Does this make sense??? Does anyone have any similar experiences? If I am not happy they will switch it for a firm. But the firm feels too firm for me to be comfortable. I guess it has only been three days. Any opinions or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it feels too soft, and it feels like your hips are sinking in too much, and you are getting lower back pain, then it probably is too soft for you.  While the feel of the mattress will probably change a bit over time, usually it is in the direction of getting softer (at least with the foam layers).  I have not looked at the construction of this particular mattress though, to know if it will be different for some reason.

When is the deadline to switch to a firm?  I assume there is nothing in between medium and firm?  It is probably worth sticking with it a while to see if changes for the better, but don't let any deadlines pass without resolving the issue.

Generally one is better getting a mattress slightly too firm (as opposed to too soft) and adding 1-2" of toppers to soften to the desired level.  Then if the mattress softens over time you can remove the toppers.  Of course this will make one side slightly taller than the other.

I do not have experience selling Vi-Spring but what they are saying actually makes sense to me because animal hair fillings get firmer with compression and use, and do not degrade.  See how long you have to decide if you wish to swap to a medium spring tension, if the problem isn't better before the deadline then make arrangements if you can.

If the padding is animal hair instead of foam, then the break in will probably be different than most users here experience.  It is possible, as Budgy says, that it can get firmer as it mats down.  Maybe that explains the difference betweens yours and the store?   Probably best to give it time and make sure you keep your options open.  Not sure how long it would take, since I have never used a mattress with that construction.

Thanks for all of your comments. It is true that a matress like Vi Spring(or Hastens, etc) will perform a bit differently than most people are used to. A nice gentleman at Vi Spring told me that this mattress has over 3 feet of filling that is compressed into this mattress. Of course there will be a settling period.  I have 90 days to decide if I'd rather have a firm. My wife's side is a firm and it is quite firm. But Vi Spring does make a fantastic topper that would help a lot. I flipped my mattress over last night and the other side is just about the same. A very soft mattress. But I slept well last night and have very little pain this morning. I have a lot of time to decide so I will of course sleep on it and see how it goes.

#sleeptight - I noticed you said it seemed softer then in the showroom. Can I ask what what sort of frame you have it placed on the matching Divan from Vi-Spring or do you have it on sitting European slats?

The mattress is very heavy I know we have two Vi-Spring Magnificence we bought in 2005 and a Sublime we just bought today but, moving on.

When we bought them we tried it on the European Slats they can't support it's weight and yours. We went an bought a divan for it the next day & have been Very pleased with all of them!

P.S. Sorry to hear it took eight weeks for you to receive it, there really is no excuse for that.

Hi Sleeptight,

Can you update us on your experience so far?  I have the same lower back pain caused by this V shape you refer to. I am considering to buy the Magnificence VI spring model but want to be sure this will solve my back pain issue.  So far my mattresses were too soft and my hip sinks too deep although I only weight 70kg.

Thanks!
