Latex Mattress Confusion! - Savvy Rest - Sleepez - Flobeds???

Hi - I am new to the forum and have read most posts and reviews out there on Latex Mattresses. It has been super helpful to me, but I am also now confused as well!!

My Back Story:
We recently bought a Tempurpedic Deluxe model. Felt comfy in the store - but I just haven't been able to get used to it and it feels like I am sleeping on a ROCK! (We have had it about 6/7 weeks now - so we are within our window to return it so it is going back!) My husband likes it, but would only rate it a comfort level of 7 (1 being worst and 10 being best) For the price paid, I would certainly hope it would be more comfortable than that for him! Plus he has been getting headaches everyday since we got the mattress, and I have had headaches on and off plus have severe head/neck/shoulder pain in the morning when I get up and never feel rested.  I know the Tempurpedics have the out gassing issue and am wondering if our headaches etc...could be due to the chemicals? I am using the same pillows we had before the mattress, so I know that shouldn't be causing the neck/shoulder head pain for me. Regardless of the out gassing - it is going back because it just isn't comfortable for me.

My husband and I are both 5' 10''. I am about 140 he is about 200. He is over mattress buying and is not offering me any input into what he wants. He just wants me to be comfy. He says he can sleep on anything, but I still want him to be comfy as well. I like the idea of buying split pieces, but he says he just wants all one piece layers. (Not sure why)

I originally was looking at the Savvy Rest because they are the only all natural and certified organic everything I can find out there. They are quite pricey though. Doing research on the web I also found Sleepez and Flobeds that I am also considering. Mainly because with Flobeds I like their return policy and Sleepez I like their price. I know they are not totally organic, but do offer All Natural Latex as an option. I have spoken with both companies and find them knowledgeable and friendly and both seem to use Latex Intl as a supplier. I have been in contact with Latex Intl and am waiting on a response about their Oeko-Tex certification to see if that is for all of their latex. (synthetic or natural) or just their natural. We'll see if I hear anything back. I am guessing it is probably just for their natural Latex as from what I can figure all the synthetic latex does use petroleum products in it - but their website seems to indicate that all their Talalay latex meets this standard, but I am not sure.

I am leaning towards the 4 layer latex sleep systems, as my husband and I both like the 'cushy' feel of a mattress, yet we do want support. One of the things I miss about my old innerspring before we got the tempurpedic was that 'spingy' feeling and being able to sit comfortably on the bed for reading etc...without continuing to sink in!

So here are my questions:

1) Is it worth going with the 4 layer latex vs. the 3 layer to get that ultimate comfy feel? (I want to feel like I am in a bed dreamland rather than the rock of a tempurpedic I am on!)

2) Anyone had any off gassing or chemical smell experience with the synthetic/natural latex blends that Flobeds and Sleepez offer? Is it better to go with the all natural for smell and piece of mind that I am not inhaling toxic chemicals? It seems like the synthetic blend will hold up longer, but I think all natural is supposed to have a pretty long life span too.
(FYI - Sleepez says t hey use a blend of 60 synthetic and 40 natural in their blend and Flobeds says they use 65 syn to 35 natural - but don't quote me on that)

3) Dunlop vs. Talalay - I know there are debates on this forum about that but being that we have never slept on latex can anyone advice which may be better for our wants of a cushy yet supportive feel?

4) Sleepez vs. Flobeds - again - I have read through all the debates on these companies. I am leaning towards Sleepez just because of price - we want a good mattress, but this is going to stretch us so every penny counts. The Sleepez rep says people typically don't do more than 1 exchange, which is all they allow. Have people found that to be true?

5) Is latex even right for us? After reading all the differing opinions, I am just worried that Latex may not be worth the hype?

Thanks ahead of time for peoples advice in helping this 'newbie' out! I wish we had a store I could test them out near by but we don't. We have one store that carries the Sealy Spring Free line - and that is comfy and I like it  but I am worried about off gassing and if it will actually last or not. Sealy gets their latex from Latex Intl too for this line - but sealy notes it is a polyurethane foam on it's website - so that makes me worry about the off gassing and after effects. Anyone had any experiences with the Spring Free line from Sealy? I didn't see much on them on this forum.

Thanks again for reading my long post!

p.s - My husband hates motion transfer - why we tried the tempur pedic) as I roll around a lot sleeping.  I am also worried that Latex may not fit me being that I miss the feel of my innerspring. Maybe it is just because I do not like what we currently have? I missing sitting in bed comfortable and reading and just feeling snuggly  in bed.

Since my spring mattresses were on the very firm side, I feel my latex bed is more comfortable, more cozy, softer but still firm and supportive. I sit and read in bed with no problems .  I sit on the edge to put on my shoes in th morning with no problems.  I attached a Wesley Allen Iron headboard and I lean on a Euro-pillow when I read before bed and my bed is very comfortable for this.  I never bottom out.  Both Friends that like very firm beds and a friend that likes a bed that is soft likes my bed since I have watched TV in my bedroom with them due to the better TV & DVD player in my bedroom.  They are amazed at how supportive but comfortable my bed is. Some how been there with me when it was at first too soft.  The closer you are to the slat-box the firm the bed is so more layers will be softer unless you have super firm in every layer. My bottom layer is 46 ILD (the 44 ILD blended latex averaged out more on that side) with a 36 ILD in the middle and a 39 ILD on top under a 1" soft Talalay Latex topper that is not split like my cores.  My other side of the bed is a 1" topper over a 34 ILD over a 44 ILD over a 35 ILD.  My two heavier friends who like very firm beds find the other side slightly firmer and slightly more comfortable for them while I find the other side slightly softer since I am lighter so I feel the 34 ILD more.   Due to being petite and not quite 5 feet tall, I wanted only a 1" topper rather than the 2" that comes with my bed.  If I was a bigger person, I may have loved the nice and soft silky cushiony 2" latex topper that came with my bed.  The mattress cover is soft and comfortable also and does not outgas.  It is difficult to get out of bed in the morning since I am so comfortable. I do not turn so much all night long to get off my pressure points like I did with a conventional mattress.  My slat box is a split also but the heavy latex on top keeps it together. I wanted it split so it would be easy to move out of the room if I change the carpet to hardwood floors like I Plan to do in the future due to my allergies.  I used to have post nasal drip all night when I slept on a conventional spring mattress filled with dust mites and chemicals but now I do not sleeping on my latex bed.

Hi,

I am currently using a 10 year old Simmons Individual pocket coil and bought the IKEA Tolg and used it on top of the old mattress for 3 fabulous nights of sleep.

We had to return it as it was not a Eastern King size ... it was the wrong size and my store received quite a few shipments of it. My mattress has hammocked and it is time to replace it, so I have been out shopping, researching and reading posts and comparing.

For point of reference, I am 6'5" and 205 lbs and my wife is 5'4" 125 lbs.

I was into IKEA today .... their Erfjord is the greenest and cheapest latex mattress on the market for me in Toronto, ON for a Eastern King mattress.

I tried it with the Tolg and it was very comfortable on my back and side. In the store, it sits on a regular slat box but the slats are too far apart. I believe the Euroslats ... or the convex slats provide more give and thus a spring like quality when sitting or lying in the bed.

I think we will be going this route as my wife is like your husband and can sleep on anything but likes something firmer. Therefore she can set her slats at a slightly firmer level and I can set mine the way I like them ... with a bit of give. The Euroslats (two per bed / one for each person), I believe will help reduce the motion transfer.

As for the nature of the latex and the materials used in the Erfjord: The latex is 85% natural latex and 15% synthetic and I believe it is a Dunlop procedure. The sample looks like clump bread with holes punched in it. I am happy to hear that the Erfjord has a higher amount of latex than the Flobeds and Sleepez products you mentioned as shipping to Canada would make it cost prohibitive. Not to say their products aren't great quality with many happy clients, I felt disappointed as pricing in the US is so much better than here in Canada.

The rest of the materials: Eco-friendly cotton cover and the wadding is made of silk/wool/corn by product.

Another thing, if you are close to an IKEA store they have a sale on right now until Sept 14 for spring beds ... 20% off ... check out the Hasselback as it is quite firm, and maybe put the Tolg on it to give you firmness AND plush quality of the Tolg latex topper. I tried this combo but felt it was still too firm for me ... I am not sure who the provider of the Latex is for the Erfjord.

Regarding the off gassing of your current mattress, look at www.chem-tox.com and you will find you are not alone regarding all of the symptoms and health complaints you were speaking about. I started getting a stiff neck and a very painful left shoulder while using a memory foam pillow. When I stopped using, those symptoms left.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Lynn - Do you work for FloBeds - because you are very persuasive for them! The one concern I had about the flow beds is that we currently have a Sleigh bed with wooden side rails that have 3 wooden cross beams and 1 center leg support. The guy at flobeds said I would need to add 2 more cross beams to be five total and maybe another center leg support in order to support their foundation and mattress properly. That probably wouldn't be hard to do - but one more thing to consider! We are just going to be getting a queen size bed to fit our current bed.  Not sure if anyone has any experience here if what we currently have would be enough support for a heavy latex bed. It supports our Tempurpedic foundation and mattress just fine, which I think are heavy, but not sure as the delivery guys handled all that stuff.

Everytime I get frustrated figuring out this latex mattress stuff I think - maybe I should just try another innerspring - but then I read the chemical toxic stuff and the fire retardant issues and think - No I can't go there! I feel I am in such as catch 22!

As far as IKEA goes - our closest one is over an hour and a half away. I did look there the other weekend as we were there on a day trip with some friends, and looked at the mattresses some - but didn't find any that really felt great. Granted I didn't get to spend a ton of time there since our friends were not mattress shopping. But when I laid down and didn't feel great, I didn't really feel like continuing to look. Does this mean that maybe I wouldn't like latex since I wasn't thrilled with the IKEA mattresses?

I know Flobeds and Sleepez are built so differently from the way the IKEA ones are that it is probably like comparing apples to oranges there. If I can find time to get to IKEA again I will, but it is hard with a small child, busy work schedule and the cost of gas just to go look at a mattress. I guess I shouldn't worry about that considering the price of some of these mattresses, but every penny saved these days helps.

Lynn - can I ask how much you ended up paying after all the price adjustments? Which size did you purchase? Right now the queen all natural is on sale for $2099 (For the 4 layer latex which they said may be better due to my husband's weight but I really don't think 200lbs is overweight but I guess that is a fair amount of weight for latex vs. my 140) plus $149 for shipping. Then I have to add on the cost of the foundation, which I am not sure to go with the traditional or Euroslat. Total cost with shipping would then be $2947 if I went with the Euroslat - which is not too far above but definitely above the about $2300 at most I wanted to spend.

cmom04, I don't work for FloBeds but I was just very happy to have good customer service and the option of tweaking my bed to a comfort level for my back. I will try to answer all your questions in the next two days. I am so tired from trying to finish a deadline for work.  I just wanted to reply before going to bed. It is 1:25 AM in NJ and I can barely keep my eyes open. I have the pine slat box since this was the frame that was least expensive when I bought it. I went with all natural latex until I found out I needed two 44 ILD's of the blended latex to make my bed firmer. I was surprised that I was not bothered by out-gassing since I am bothered by man-made latex that is not the Talalay processing.

This is what I have.(below link) Only I have LuraFlex coils with latex layers and one layer of high density firm PU foam as a base. I prefer the feel of springs and I like the fact that I can unzip my mattress and move around the latex layers as needed. Do you happen to live anywhere near this store?

Thanks Beddybye - Baybed looks nice, but I am in the middle of GA - so no where near the store!

I did find a local store here that sells Restonic Latex Beds. LI is the supplier for them, but I am sure they use all synthetic. I'll probably still go test it out to see what it feels like but am worried about smell etc...those big showrooms never have a smell but it is totally different when it comes home. We have one other mattress dealer that carries the Sealy Spring Free - which LI also supplies for - but I know a bunch of other stuff is used in that mattress as well. Anyone heard of Restonic? I'll do a search on the forum as well.

My mom just ordered a Latex bed from Original Mattress Factory. She gets it on Saturday. Their Latex is from LI (who's isn't?) But I am sure it is synthetic and treated with chemicals as the salesman warned them up front there would be a smell and it would need to air out. I have my fears she won't like it, but for lack of better words, I love her but she tends to be cheap on things. I'm still anxious to hear how she likes it though.

Lynn - I am leaning towards Flobeds due to the return policy and after reading NovaHelp's long drawn out issue with trying to find the right comfort level and then returning it!  Sleepez has gotten rid of their restocking fee - but you still pay whatever it is to send them back and if you can't get everything back in those boxes it could be expensive.  I am going to check around to see if I can find a slatted foundation locally to save a little money there as well.

I wish I could find something locally. Had another horrible night of sleep last night and feel terrible this morning as usual. I just want some good sleep! Thanks!

As soon as my deadline ends on Monday, I will answer the other questions and pull out my FloBeds folder.  Sorry... so stressed and many clients will be here tomorrow on a Sunday.  Going to bed finally at 1:07 AM.

I forgot about this post due to so many dental treatments. I have the paperwork in my prior year files upstairs that I will get to after I finish this next project tomorrow. My employee is not with me anymore so I have to work tomorrow to finish what she did not finish.

Hi,

I was wondering if you purchased your bed yet?  If so, what did you get and are you happy with it?  I'd love to hear about your experience.  I posted quite a while ago regarding organic latex, but our bed-search went on hold.

Thank you!
