I noticed that customs sleep design mattresses come without a wool cover. They have in fact a terry cotton cover only.

This is unusual. My question is would absence of a wool cover alter the feeling and durability of a latex mattress?

I thought wool cover was absolutely necessay in a all latex mattress.

Comments please. Thank you very much.

its not absolutely required by any means...but without wool some kind of water proof mattress protector should be used or perhaps just a wool filled mattress protector.  granted I would recommend one regardless of whether there is wool in the mattress or not.

What's the best waterproof, yet breathable mattress protector to use? Is this is a good one . .. http://www.protectabed.com/product.htm?pid=643047 ?  Are there better ones to be had?

i really don't think anything like that is going to be enough moisture absorption..the thin layer of cotton on top of the waterproof membrane will quickly become saturated in moisture making for a clammy humid environment near the skin.  if you want water proof and breathable/temperature regulating look at the Natura Deluxe Protect mattress pad.  Or if you just want breathable and water resistant, the St. Dormeir wool filled mattress protector is a good bet.

I thought latex mattresses came with wool because tightly woven wool is fire retardent.  From what I've read here, I would recommend a moisture barrier.  You can find wool moisture barrier online.  They are thin, tightly woven and probably won't alter the feel of the mattress much.  Don't mistake a "wool topper" for a "wool mattress pad".

Hey Ray Charles...... not sure where you came up with the facts for your opening line, but on the thread that I've referred you to on half a dozen occasions, it states CSD's cover construction:

"The cover is organic cotton with wool backing and zipper."
