Latex topper directly on inner springs?

Background:

Over a year ago I opened up my mattress and experimented with different configurations using the existing foam. I ended up removing the topmost plush layer (about 1.5 - 2 inches thich) which had the most sag and I put some material between the boxspring and the inner spring to bring the springs back to level (there was less than a one inch sag in the springs, can't remember exactly how much now, maybe 5/8 inch). I had 3 one-inch pieces of PU foam left in the mattress. Mattress felt ok but kinda hard after that (so not great) but now starting to wake up with backaches again (more sagging from the remaining layers) so I'm planning to just replace all the PU foam with latex.

For people who have gone down the path of latex over springs, do you simply lay the latex directly on the springs or do you put something between the springs and the latex so the latex isn't damaged. Right now, the lowest PU foam layer has some kind of white cotton-like feeling material on the underside of it. This is the part that lays on the springs.

I have a pure Latex mattress and no experience with putting Latex on springs...

I suggest that you will want to put a suitable interface between the springs and the Latex topper layer to protect the Latex.  I'm not sure what that should be, but one idea that comes to mind would be a felt pad similar to that used under a rug.  For example, here is some very nice felt padding that might work.

Thanks for suggesting the felt padding. You know some years ago I opended up a cheap no name mattress that my wife had bought before we moved in together. Directly on top of the springs was some kind of protective layer that reminded me of a certain type of outdoor foot mat I used to see as a kid and immediately above that was a single layer of felt padding. Then there was the cover which had about 1/8 inch of foam incorpoated into it. That was it. But yes, felt padding was part of the comfort layer. Go figure. Since everyone else was using cheap foam I guess they figured they would go with no foam. lol.
