Looking to buy a latex mattress: few questions

Hi,
Me and my wife are looking to purchase a new queen-sized latex matress and we are considering SleepEz or FloBeds as our main options.

Although, we are located in Canada, so shipping + border taxes + low CAD$ right now are making this a serious purchase.

I am 5"9, 125 pounds and prefer sleeping on front (sometimes on the side).
My wife is 5"6 140 pounds and is a side sleeper/ back sleeper.

After my research, I was thinking about a half-half configuration like this one (based on the fact that we have back problems and enjoy a firmer bed):
Me:
Medium
Firm
Firm
Firm

My wife:
Firm
Medium
Firm
Firm
(with possibility to switch the top layers for side sleeping)

What would be your recommandations for this configuration? Does this sound right? My problem with this configuration is that we won't really be able to switch the layers and try different combinations if not pleased. I don't know if it could be better in that matter. I am also wondering what would be best between Dunlop or Talalay blended (or possibly a mix of both)? Also, who would you recommend best between SleepEz or FloBeds (knowing we need to scope with all these additional cost stated above).
I guess another option to consider is going for a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress, which we could find locally for a cheaper price. Although I don't know much about memory foam and I know people on this forum are in favor in latex. Is there any better options for residents of Canada?

Additionnaly, I don't really know much about the boxspring or slat foundation so any recommandation would be welcome.

We would really like this mattress to be suited to our needs and last a long time.
I am looking forward to hear back from you guys, your help is greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Kevin,

I too live in Canada. I am not sure where you live, but if you live in the GTA then there is a Canadian option.

The company is called Foamite and they have three locations where you can purchase your individually custom design mattress. Their website is www.foamite.com

Their pricing is much better than Flobeds or SleepEZ due to the exchange on the dollar, shipping and GST as you bring it in to the country.

I am considering purchasing 5" of the Koosh foam as the HQ LX foam base as the support, with it cut in two ... for my wife and myself. This is about $640 CDN.

Then I plan on buying from www.foambymail.com the Talalay topper of 3" which is about $279 US or $375 CDN .... which is 66% less than buying it from Foamite.

I am right now trying to decide if what kind of mattress cover we plan on buying and I think it will be a thin cotton zippered cover and then put a thinker organic mattress cover over it.

These are my thoughts, I hope they help.

I am going tomorrow to sleep on several mattresses and will report ...

Cheers.

Still looking for a bed.... any advices on the proposed configuration? Am I on the right track? I would like to get relief from all the back pains :/

Many thanks in advance.

If you have back pain latex might not be a good idea for you--particularly lower back pain.

Cloud9,

Why is that ... regarding back pain and lower back .... not being good with a Latex mattress?

I had a car accident with 5 herniated disks as a result of being hit behind. I just called FloBeds and told them I needed some more exchanges due to the car accident and wanted my bed now a bit firmer and they allowed it. If I go to bed with back pain, I wake up with much less pain.  If I go to bed with no back pain, I wake up with no pain. My bed feels wonderful on my back. I have a lot of back pain now when sitting for hours in seminar classes or driving my car for many miles. But my latex bed is wonderful because I spent the time making sure I had the right topper and right set up with the three latex cores on both sides of my bed. It was worth the time for comfort.

Why would it be that latex wouldnt be good for back problem. I thought latex was the way to go...

Jazzsinger777,
Thanks for all the great input. Have you purchased your bed yet? If so, your feedback on
Foamite would be greatly appreciated.

Lynn2006,
Glad to hear that you're getting back relief from the FloBeds latex mattress.
Can you give precision on your actual configuration? I am leaning slightly toward FloBeds, even if the price will end up being...atrocious -_-

Again, I am 5"9, 125 pounds and prefer sleeping on front (sometimes on the side).

So, FloBeds is currently proposing me this type of configuration:
Deluxe mattress
'So i would for yourself
recommend Soft over medium over firm. And for
your wife Medium over firm over Xfirm. With these
firmness selections you will be able to change
the feel and overall firmness of your mattress
with a few simple adjustments.'

Not sure, but I think for Canada I would have to pay shipping for every exchange... although, this configuration seems to offer many options.
For the slat foundation, I would like to be able to save on shipping and get something domestically (could be Ikea? or something else)
If you have any recommendations that could be equivalent in terms of quality to what FloBeds offer for foundation, feel free.

Many thanks,
Kevin

Lynn,

My husband and I both have a history of back problems and both have had surgery for herniated disks.  For Christmas I bought him a Tush Cush based on advice from some posters on the GardenWeb forums.  (I've seen your posts over there too).  My husband hasn't used his yet, but a co-worker of mine ordered one too, and she said that it has made a huge difference for her.  It is basically a foam cushion with a cut out in the back that allows the spine to decompress while you are sitting.  It might be good for you since it sound like you need to do a lot of sitting and driving.

Latex may not be a good fit for people with lumbar back issues because it doesn't support their spine properly. They often do better on innerspring mattresses that utilize a bonnell variant like an offset coil. People that have trouble with latex usually have the same complaint with pocket coils because they support the body in a similar manner to latex.

Of course this is not to say that if you have any kind of lower back pain you won't be able to sleep on latex, but you should go into the purchase away of the possibility that you just won't be comfortable. This means make sure of your return or exchange options before you purchase just in case, and make sure you're okay with any additional charges you might have to incur like return shipping or restocking fees.

Terriks, That Tush Cush sounds like a great idea. I will look into it. Thank you.  Before the car accident, I didn't have any back problems but due to my slight scoliosis, I always just slept on very firm beds with no back pain.  Now I seem to need firmness with a little give.

Keven, My set up is for me and I am only 4'10.5" and 100 lbs so I wanted only a 1" soft topper so I would have some cushion but not a lot.  I then have on my right side, two 37 ILD natural latex Extra Firm (called that by FloBeds but each company calls their ILD's different firmness names) over a 46 ILD latex Core (the 44 averaged to a 44 and this is a blended latex core that surprisingly I had no reaction to and I am chemically sensitive so Talalay Latex must really clean the latex good since I had  reaction to a man-made latex pillow 2 years ago and could not sleep on it so now I sleep on natural Talalay Latex medium firmness pillows).  I bought their pine slat box and love it  now but for the first week that pine smell bothered me until I aired it out good. I guess I dislike any smells in my bedroom.

On my left side, I have a 36 ILD over a 44 ILD over a 39 on the average ILD.  I wish my left side was the same as my right side so I still think of calling FloBeds but it may be pushing it since I bought the bed in May 2007. The left side is very firm and comfortable but my right side is just slightly softer but firm at the same time and I like it a lot.

I am a side sleeper so I needed the cushion. I tried sleeping without a topper but then I needed a softer latex core and then my back would hurt. I tried sleeping on a 44 ILD but my shoulders hurt.  At least I have no allergies when I sleep and I do not toss and turn so much like my former too firm mattress that had no topper and was a Sealy Posteurpedic.  I could not sleep with any of the pillow tops that hurt my bed and created allergies.
