Mattress cover/encasement/topper question
Hi, I have a Flobeds E. King latex bed that I'd like to use more flexibly. It is in my guest bedroom, and since the foundations AND cores are actually TwinXL pieces, kept together by an E.King mattress cover/encasement, I'd really like the option to split them into two TwinXL beds when the room is being used by kids. I found this cover/encasement and it seems like JUST what I need, but it is a bit pricey: http://www.sleeplikeabear.com/product/COV-WOL-018 Can anyone recommend a cheaper option for this purpose? I've found the very cheap allergy covers, and a few thin cotton (or, ugh, polyester) encasements that don't offer any real "topper" effect, and that's not what I'm looking for. I do want the topper layer built-in, and for the beds to look like "real" mattresses when they're zipped up. I hope I'm being clear, if not please let me know! :) The cores are two layers of 3" latex and one 2" layer of latex convolute. Thanks so much! |
Re: Mattress cover/encasement/topper question
I bought the terry cloth zippered case from FoamByMail.com. Queen size is $65 + shipping. It feels more like velour than terry cloth, and isn't as thick as a towel, but it's nice quality and stretchy, and zips completely around so it was easy to set up. The bottom has little nubby dots on it to prevent slipping, but latex weighs so much I don't think that's necessary. You can wash the top of the case, but not the bottom (it unzips completely.) However I use a cotton pad on top of everything, so I don't think I'll need to wash mine. Now my latex toppers look like a traditional mattress. |
Re: Mattress cover/encasement/topper question
Narnia, I wish I had been as clever as you were in setting up my all latex mattress! I commend you on thinking "out of the box/mattress"! I have an expensive cotton and joma wool mattress cover on my original latex mattress that is doing me absolutely no good. It's covered up by a bare 3 inch natural latex topper from Foam Sweet Foam.....haha! The added topper makes the mattress system feel wonderful, but what a waste of a nice cover on the mattress below it....oh well. (No, it doesn't zip off) Live and learn sometimes. Re: Mattress cover/encasement/topper question
It's a latex mattress from a local mattress company in my area. The latex is SEWN into the cover so the layers are not removable like with a mattress purchased over the internet. I found it a bit too firm (had already done one comfort exchange from a softer one) so I added a 3 inch "medium" topper from FoamSweetFoam....and now it's just about perfect for me. I have 5.5 inches of 40 ILD base layer, followed by 2.5 inches of 32 ILD.......both inside the permanent mattress cover, then the 3 inches of 24-28 ILD topper. I bought the bed before I knew all about Flobeds and the other online latex dealers and their liberal exchange policies. I ended up at the same place (11 inches of latex comfort and support) but just got there via a different route. |

Why do you have latex over the wool mattress cover - why isn't the mattress cover on top of the latex? |
Re: Mattress cover/encasement/topper question
Alright, narnia, I decided to be more sensible, spend a TON less money and go your route! Thanks for the recommendation. I HAD looked at those before but without some information or a recommendation I was hesitant to jump on them. I've read so many reviews (about OTHER products) and the big problem has been the material is too thin and tears just from trying to get it stretched and zipped over the foam. I gather from your post you didn't experience anything like that? Do you feel this will hold up well to use with kids in a play room (there will be some bed-jumping, not much I can do about it, can't watch them 24/7!) :) In any case, I did order the terry cloth covers, can't wait to get them and have this little project DONE and behind me. Thanks for the input. :) Oh, and the reason the other poster is saying he has his foam OVER the cover instead of under it is because his cover doesn't unzip/doesn't come off. He can't open it up to put his foam inside. |
