Hi everyone,
GREAT FORUM... this is m first post...
I am in a HUGE dillemma right now with my current mattress purchase. I had a saggy Serta mattress that they didn't warranty as it wasn't saggins 1.5" without any weight on it (a lot more if you slept on it). So, I decided to go out and get myself a new set. From past experiences with Serta and Sealy, I decided to go Simmons and pocket Coil.
I purchased a FIRM Simmons, World Class (980 springs), Medium Pillowtop (not as big of Eurotop, 1.5-2" top of memroy/latex mix). I took it home and slept on it... it feels OK if I sleep on my back, but I start on my side, and end up on my back... so now it's starting to hurt my shoulders as I get pressure points on it. My girlfried also doesn't like it as it's too hard for her.
So, then I started searching online and learned a lot, and also went back and tried literally EVERY bed in the store, I got 30-days for exhange! I AM NOW MORE CONFUSED THAN EVER! :( My options are: 1. Get the same Simmons mattress with bigger pillowtop (Eurotop) to help with shoulder 2. Get a Stearns and Fosters Eurotop (kind of in between Simmong Eurotop, and my current Simmons) 3. Get a Stearns and Fosters Tighttop (no pillow top), and add a Natural Latext 2" Mattress Topper
I got the following questions: - Is Simon/Fosters mid-range mattresses any better than Simmons World Class? - Would Eurotop of 3-4" have any issues with long-term wear? - If I want to get a Latex Topper, what's the best brand, best kind (weight), and where to get it from?
I am leaning towards #3, but I kind of DO NOT like a FLAT mattress topper underneath my sheets... just looks and feels cheap! Will also take away from the natural fibers of mattress as well as the convoluted shape. Is there a Latex topper that is covered like a mattress I can just add?
Thanks for any help and I appreciate quick responses as I have only 3 more days to exhange the mattress. I can't really return it (20% restocking fee).

I think perhaps you should instead go for the S&F Tighttop and then add a topper. A latex topper will last a looong time... the eggcrate topper I mentioned in the earlier post may last several years. But toppers are easily replaced... pillowtops aren't. I would NOT exchange for a mattress with a bigger, plusher "pillowtop", "eurotop" or anything that would increase the amount of cheap PU foam in the mattress. You'd be asking for trouble with sagging/craters/body impressions just a couple years down the road. Just my two cents.
I can either go with Simmons Tight-top, or Stearns and Fosters Tight-top? Any preference between the two? My parents Simmons from 12 years ago is still GREAT and had 20yr warranty, but it looks like all the news ones are built a lot worse and cheaper with only 10yr warranty.

| You need to find out what exactly is in the top of the Stearns and Foster Eurotop. If it is all latex or combo of latex/quality memory foam, with no PU foam, or just a tad of PU stitched to the fabric, then it should be o.k. But if the Eurotop is full of PU foam, then stay away from it and go with a tighttop and add your own topper. The only disadvantage to that approach is you do lose direct contact with the mattress's top fabric which in the Stearns and Foster does tend to be a higher quality fabric. Sleeplikeabear sells some nice looking (I have no personal experience with them) topper covers/encasements that have wool quilted to them that could be a good substitute for the luxury quilting on top of the S&F that you will be covering up. Whatever you do, avoid going with a substitute mattress that is loaded with PU foam in the comfort layer - it will feel great for a few months and then......bad news. |

The S&F has two pillowtop version... both feature 1080 tempered steel pocket coil innerspring, 360 degree foam encasement and silk and wool materialsone; one has a 3" solid natural latex, and the other has 1.5" convoluted latex and ultra high density upholstry. I personally like the smaller one, 3" top looks too big for me, and a lot mor expensive, although sounds like it has better foam!
The Simmons version has: layer of comfort foam, layer of firm Soya based Firm Foam, layer of zoned Latex foam, layer of Soya based convoluted foam.

Do these come covered? or just foam? Also, I was going to change my mattress, then add a topper. If so, do you recommend a tight-top Simon and Fosters instead of my current Simmons?or shall I keep what I got?

| alexb: Did you get an extension on time to do an exchange - in your original post over a week ago you said you only had 3 days to make a decision? Did you check out the S&F Eurotop that is all latex in the comfort layer? Depending on what ILD latex they use (ask - they should be able to tell you) it might be too firm for your girlfriend. Rarely is a mattress with good quality latex in the comfort layer too soft. I currently have 2 1" toppers of 14 ILD from sleeplikeabear that am playing with. 1 is not enough to soften a surface for me but 2 of them stacked does a good job. I'm only about 100 lb. Let us know what you decide on and report back to keep us informed. |

Yes, kind of, I had 30-days in-home adjustmet period, plus a couple of weeks that I could exchange (they dont advise to change within 30days), but he didn't say exactly how much time I have after 30days is passed, but basically I gotto make a decision one way or another.
The S&F Latex top is very comfortable, but out of my price range... 3" latex top. The other ones are 1.5" latex, and one without any specified size of latex (just says, convoluted latex)... so again, back at either getting the 1.5" latex, or get a non-pillow top and add my own (from Atlanta mattress probably). |
| you should be aware that all simmons mattresses made now, as opposed to a decade ago, are soft. even those rated by them as firm. they use a thin coil gauge in the coils and a ton of soft padding. if you don't need much back support go for it. I weigh under90 pounds and sank into a "firm" simmons. totally collapsed when I sat on the edge |
| I would never buy a Simmons anything. Had one that wore out in less than a year. |
