Sealy IComfort is Horrible!!!

We went from a 20 year old mattress to the Serta IComfort 3 weeks ago and we are regretting it every morning!  It is like sleeping on a board.  It is so hard and seems to have no give.  My husband jokingly says this mattress must be made for people who are very overweight, because it will take a lot to make any impression in it.  I am a side sleeper and I wake up with numb arms and hands thoughout the night, I assume it is from no "give" in the mattress so my body weight is all on the arm I am sleeping on.  I have not slept an entire night since we got it.  My husband says he thinks it has gotten a little better in the last 3 weeks, but not enough to warrant the $1800 we paid.  Needless to say, we are both regretting the decision to buy this mattress.  And here's the worst part, we live in TN and apparantly, in our state, you cannot return a mattress.  Something about hygeine.  Yes I get it, and would be ok if we were talking a few hundred dollars, learn your lesson and go buy something else, but we are screwed.  We certainly don't have the money to go buy anything else.  So the 120 day in home trial means nothing.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?  I have heard buying a memory foam topper may help, but isn't that putting memory foam on top of memory foam?  Any suggestions of how to make this bed softer would be helpful.

Hi.. Auntimame31...  I sort of have felt your pain... I bought the IComfort Prodigy...3 weeks ago..mine was a return of a 3 year mattress that I couldn't sleep on at all it was defective.   I was pretty much escorted to the I Comfort line in the store as the fix for my back and sciatica problems.. or the Tempupedic.. however $$$$'s swayed me from the Tempupedic thus giving into the I Comfort.   I was coming off a latex mattress so after having that anything with coils felt like a nightmare waiting to happen.  We were told right off the bat the bed would feel very firm when we receive it.. and yes it was but where my hips were they seemed to sink into the mattress after appr. 10 minutes.. that is due to your body heat on the memory foam..very strange feeling to me along with the fact my legs from the knees to my ankle seemed to be lifted up and not in a comfortable resting place.  After the first week I went back to the store to vent over the mattress purchase and the fellows there said this is a bed that needs to be broken in...that is why Serta gives you that 120 day risk free trial.. but they insisted I give it a full 30 days and then make a decision.. At that point I didn't think I could hack another night in this bed.  However, my husband loves it.   The fellows told me to walk on the bed to loosen the memory foam and make it more flexible and to start sleeping on the opposite end of the be to condition it, or flip it from head to toe to alternate how your body will lay on it.. well I began sleeping at the foot of the bed for appr. 4 nights and to my surprise the beast ( as I call it) has started to soften up.. I still have another week to my 30 day in store exchange.. but the rest of the Serta time if I don't do anything next week..you have that as well, contact Serta and tell them your story.   But back to my story.. somewhere late last week the bed seemed better or I was adjusting not sure which of the two...the thought of going back to the store to try out coil beds that truly are the worst as they compress quickly is not really an option for me.  Well, I am giving it a go to the 30 days and really each night I do feel it is better.. I am now in a love hate relationship with my mattress.. I mean seriously, the mattress industry has so many mattresses out there the consumer can literaly go insane..   I also find both myself and my husband are tossing and turning more than I can ever remember, but my bed is actually starting to feel comfortable but not lovable..My back pain seems better but still get the sciatica but not as bad...I guess at this point I am not sure if I want to cut off my nose to spite my face and try another bed to only find out it was really a bad choice.. I know what I have, but do not know what I would be letting myself into with another choice.. and the only other choices would be a coil mattress or Tempurpedic...Oh forgot I do feel hotter in my bed.. I live in Florida.. and it is not yet hot here like summer.. so who knows what I will be like then...I would love to here your outcome from your experience and will let you know if I decide to give up on the I Comfort and go another route or if I continue to adapt to the "BEAST".. good luck..!!!

Have you considered a talaylay latex topper? I hate memory foam, so I haven't read much about it, but I think you are supposed to only use a thin layer of the stuff. Maybe memory foam is meant for a cushier bed underneath?

I've seen people use firm beds to firm up their latex toppers, so maybe that would be a good use of it.

That is terrible about the Tennessee rule! It's expensive enough - seems that should be eaten by the companies as a cost of doing business. Most grocery stores destroy returned food. Maybe you can start a petition on Change.org - one might argue that the mattress prices would go up, but, I bet you are not getting a discount right now. Sounds like similar pricing to the rest of us.

It is in most states and that is one of the reasons the mark up is so high on mattresses. They put the high mark up to help absorb the cost of exchanges. If they do comfort exchange they have to either donate it or they send it through an expensive sanitization process and resell it as used bedding.

It seems that Tennessee has a special regulation - referencing the below.

I'll have to look into the standards. I would hope it would be the case anywhere...

Yeah..I checked a few other major companies and they all say not available in Tenn. It appears that Tenn is the only state it isnt permited as far as I can see. North Carolina you cant resell a used mattress, but compaines have taken in the exchanges and shipped them to their SC stores to resell. It just seems in Tenn you cant take them at all.

When we got a Comforpedic memory foam mattress last year, it gave me aches & pains in places I didn't know I had. Once we added a 2" topper of latex, though, it turned into the best bed I've ever slept on.
