Below, please find the photos which I took yesterday. Thanks Sandman for your idea, photos, and input. Thanks also to jimsocal for your comments and suggestions. I'm not sure where this bed falls in the Sealy lineup, but I paid $ 1,100.00 for a king size set (two twin XL mattresses and box springs). The latex bed I bought about four years ago was 100% latex, no poly foam, and it was purchased from a local mattress store. I believe it had a 6" to 8" base (core) of 24-36 ILD (I don't remember for sure) natural latex (it may have been 4" of 36 ILD, then 4" of 32 ILD or 24 ILD, then a 2" top layer of softer latex, around 19 ILD? My shoulders stayed on top of the bed, and my hips sank. The bed overall felt hard. We tried a modular foundation and a coil foundation beneath, but still couldn't make this bed comfortable. I don't recall if the bed was dunlop latex or talalay, my guess is talalay. We ended up exchanging the bed for a very firm innerspring mattress. I tried about six different toppers on top of this bed, latex, sensus, aerus, poly eggcrate, etc., and couldn't make this bed comfortable either. The key to this Sealy bed rebuild is back support. I'd like to be able to sleep without waking up from back pain. In a perfect world, I'd like just enough surface softness that my arms don't fall asleep, and that I don't feel like I'm laying on a board. At the moment, I'm considering a 2" thick piece of 32 ILD natural talalay latex (from Sleep LIke a Bear), topped with a 1½" or 2" thick dunlop topper (around 20-24 ILD), perhaps from Overstock. I'm hoping this will treat my back with respect, while offering some surface comfort. I don't want to end up spending $ 600 to $ 800 on this project. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your support. |

You could also look at SleepEZ for your talalay latex. Their 2" 32 ILD All Natural Talalay layer is $325 and it's made by Latex International. If you can go with blended Talalay, they have a very sweet deal on the 2" 32 ILD Blended Talalay layer for $240. Shipping is $49 per order (not per item). You might consider ordering both the 24 lLD and the 32 ILD from them unless your dead set on having a Dunlop top layer. For the blended Talalay, that would total just $529 including shipping. (I just ordered three such 2" King layers myself, two 32 ILD and one 24 ILD, for a mattress I'm building... that's why I'm so familiar with their products. For reasons I won't go into, the $49 shipping charge was waived, so I got 6" of top-quality latex for $720. Not bad.) If you think you might go with SleepEZ, do us all a favor and find out what their return policy really is. They seem to list two different policies on their web site. If you click on my first link to view their Latex Mattress Replacement Components, the fine print says "30 day money back guarantee". Click on the second or third link and you'll see "90 Day Return Policy, 20% Restocking Fee". Let us know if you find out. |
