Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
For those of you that sleep on latex mattresses or latex toppers, can you tell me what setup and/or ILD that your hips feel no pain? Kimberly you use to have hip pain, but I am not sure if you still have no pain all the time. I remember (I think) 36ILD for the layers and the convoluted topper all Flobed right? Vzone Flobed users what ILD do you use for your hips? I am talking about people who experienced painful pressure points from side sleeping. For those young people who never experience problems sleeping or even mature people who don't have problems with pressure points those experiences don't help, because they can sleep on rocks LOL. That would be my husband. He doesn't know how lucky he is........ Thanks for any help. |
Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
Hi Leo, FloBed's mattress advisor was waaaaay off for me! I didn't like the idea of the VZone even though I'm a side sleeper, so it recommended medium over firm for me, same as it did for you. I got a much firmer configuration instead, 3 layers, F/XF/F and that was still much too soft. If I sleep on a mattress that's too hard my hips are happy but my arms fall asleep, so I'm trying out an XF VZone that is firmer under the hips than the shoulders. But I'm afraid it's too soon for me to tell how that will work out - I only received my vzone layer today. Besides, maybe you don't want mattress advice from a youngster like me - I'm just 49. :-) Linda |
Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
I agree with Kimberly - call Flobeds and discuss it with them. Also, that 32 vs 34 is a moot point. The way they measure latex, there is a - or + 2ILD margin of error. I will say that the Dunlop layer I bought from SleepEZ is a 32ILD and it feels like a 36-38 Talalay to me. So if you need FIRMER, go with Dunlop and see if you like it. I think foamorder or someone sells pieces of Dunlop so you could buy one piece just for your hip section or whatever, the exact size you need for one region... or two regions... |
Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
Thanks Kimberly and Linda for the info. I wish I could order a Flobed. I was just using their advisor chart online to see what it said. I can not afford such a nice bed right now, wish I could. I am still working on the O-stock latex layers I have, which I believe are too soft. So I was looking to add firmness for my hip pain. My shoulders are happy. So it sounds like 34-36 ILD might be what I need to get. Sleeplikeabear only has 32ILD, then it jumps to 36ILD, then 40ILD. 32ILD may not be enough, and 36 might be too much. They seem to be the cheapest for latex layers. Other than Rocky Mountain and they only have 32ILD. I only want to add 2" not a 3" latex layer. I already have 4 1/2" latex layers that are probably 28-32ILD, and 1" that is 20ILD. I just think I need a firmer layer underneath all the latex, or in the middle. I am so close to having this right it is I can feel it. I agree Linda being only 49 you may be too young to listen to your advice, LOL. Keeps us posted on what ILD layers you end up using. It probably would make a different on sleeping for me if I lost some weight! Can I have beer on my new diet? Lack of sleep is making me goofy. This message was modified Feb 16, 2010 by Leo3

Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
I wish I could afford to buy a Flobed, but I can't Jim, when you slept on the Dunlop that was 32 and it feels like 36-38 you said that hurt your back if I believe correctly. So sleeping on too firm hurts your back too. Which makes sense if the small of your back has nothing to support it. Since I can only get 32ILD, or a 36ILD from Sleeplikeabear and I only want a 2" this will be difficult to find. The 32ILD you have do you think it is somewhat firm? How is your back now since you removed the wool topper? This message was modified Feb 16, 2010 by Leo3

Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
Yes, that 32 ILD hurt my back. Too firm for me. The 32ILD Talalay is more towards soft, the 32ILD Dunlop is more towards firm. Yes,after I took the wool topper off my mattress seems to be better for my back. Not sure if it was because of the wool or if it was just coincidence that my back is healing from all that work I did the previous week. A Dunlop piece might be what you need if you're looking for firm. |

Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
Why are you calling out Flobeds? What does Flobeds have to do with *your* sleep issues? They offer latex mattresses, and I think air and water mattressess as well. The people on this forum who have purchased from Flobeds have tended to purchase their latex products - at least I haven't seen any reports on their air/water bed products. The forum users here have stated many times, in many different threads, that latex isn't for everyone. Jimsocal is a notable case in point. He tried a Flobeds and it didn't work out for him. However, even the people who purchased from Flobeds and returned their beds because latex wasn't the solution for them acknowledge that it is a first rate company with exemplary customer service. Other people have tried latex mattresses from other latex mattress retailers, e.g., Sleepez and Saavy Rest. Some have been happy, some have returned their mattresses. Some people can't deal with Dunlop latex, some people can't deal with Talalay latex. Some people have tried various Costco memory foam/latex mattresses and all latex mattresses. Some have turned to mattress surgery (Jimsocal being the guru in that department). Some people have had good experiences with Tempurpedics and Tempurpedic knock-offs. Everyone is different, with different preferences regarding how they want their mattress to feel, and how their bodies respond to different mattress components and firmness levels. There is no one solution for everybody. Seems irresponsible to call out ONE mattress company that you haven't even purchased from because you tried a latex *topper* and it wasn't the answer for you. |
Re: Side sleepers and latex toppers or mattress poll
@ LEO - if you are still interested in trying a latex mattress, you might want to look at the Arizona Mattress Company that Sager brought to our attention. The prices there do seem very good, and it might be a very cost effective way to try out a latex mattress and see how it works for you. http://www.latexmattresscompany.com/ |
