Soft or Medium Topper for Firm latex core?

I purchased a "Firm" (33-38 ILD) 6" latex core from foambymail several months ago. I've enjoyed the support the mattress offers, but as a primarily side-sleeper, I've discovered it to be a bit too firm for my hips, and would like to "sink in" just a little bit more. (Right now it often feels like there's no "give" to the mattress.)

I'm thinking a 2" topper ought to do it, but I'm not sure which firmness to select. Foambymail offers soft (20 ILD) and medium (32) options. This seems like a fairly large ILD spread (20 vs. 32) but maybe at just 2" it doesn't matter so much.

Has anyone had experience with a soft topper over a firm core? I don't want to lose the support the firm mattress is offering, but nor do I want to find out that the medium topper really just offers more of the same density. Most of the time I'm reading that people select a topper that is one density above or below their core.

Thanks so much - this is an excellent forum.

i would go with a 20 ILD topper (soft), 1", at least. I have a bed comprised of various layers of PU foam, and without the 1" soft latex layer on top it's too firm for me (and i don't love a too-soft mattress!). You might want to get the soft topper, see how it feels, and then get another medium or soft topper if it's not soft enough for you. But that 1" soft topper makes all the difference for me!

I was in about the same situation as you.  I purchased a "firm" latex mattress from a local store after I had already exchanged a "medium" due to bottoming out problems.  The firm has 5.5 inches of 40 ILD core with 2.5 inches of 32 ILD on top.   TOO FIRM !   I wanted a softer feel as a side and stomach sleeper.   After MUCH thought and research I purchased a "medium" (24-28 ILD) 100% natural latex topper from FoamSweetFoam which is 3 inches thick.  I'm now sleeping on 11 inches of latex.  While still quite supportive, this topper is luxuriously soft, but I can still feel the firmer layers below sometimes.   As some have said, I think the 100% natural latex is a bit denser and might offer a tad more support than the blended.

I didn't want to deal with several 1 inch layers possibly moving around, but that would give you more flexiblity to try several combinations.

You need relief on the pressure points.  If it were my choice I'd go 2" soft topper, especially if your a side sleeper.
I think they're cutting their medium toppers from 36 ILD cores.

If you are only sleeping on 6" aren't you bottoming out?  Did you mention your weight?  I think I would add 3" if you are light, and more if you are heavier.

I wouldn't get less than 24ILD blended talalay.  Anything softer than that just doesn't do much, for me anyway.   Let us know what you did and how it worked out.
