Is there a big enough difference in feel of the Rhapsody and the Deluxe to warrant spending the extra money on the Rhapsody? I didn't notice much of a difference in the store, and I tried several stores with different ages of mattresses. I'm a 187 lb mostly side-sleeper with a bit too much tummy. Sometimes I sleep on my back, sometimes stomach. My physical problems are mostly bursitis in my shoulders, neck pain, leg, foot and knee pain. Usually not too much back pain, however I have started using an adjustable base and even with the head raised only a couple of inches, I was waking up with lower back, hip and waist pain on both the TP Classic and the TP Cloud Supreme. The Cloud Supreme also gave me major lower back, hip and waist pain even with the bed in the flat position, because it was too soft. That "bit too much tummy" I mentioned above caused that part of me to sink too much into the Cloud Supreme, which is what I believe was causing my hip and waist pain with that mattress. The Classic gave me numb and sore arms because it was too firm. I didn't have back pain with the Classic until I started raising the head a little. The numbness and sore arm problem was starting to get slightly better when I traded it for the Cloud, so I wonder if the Classic might eventually have worked out. Maybe I gave up on it too soon, I don't know. TP recommends both the Deluxe or the Rhapsody for my problems. Any opinion on which of those two would be best on the shoulders and not cause lower back, hip and waist pain when I have the head raised 2-4 inches, and won't let my ample tummy sink in so far that I wake up with waist pain from that either? When I compared the Deluxe and Rhapsody, I found the Rhapsody to be a little firmer. It seemed to take a little longer to sink into. You might want to go with the firmer Rhapsody. If it's too firm, it's easy enough to soften it up a tad with a 1" topper. You may only need it until it breaks in. It's almost impossible to firm up a bed that's too soft. |
Thanks fishstick and Gary. I was thinking of going with the firmer, but the TP people told me the Rhapsody is initially firmer, but becomes softer than the Deluxe over time, which has me thoroughly confused, since most people say the Rhapsody is firmer even over time. |
Went to a furniture store in a different town today. They opened a few months ago, so their displays are all about the same age. They told me they walked on all their TPs to break them in, so all of them were evenly broken in. This made a huge difference in figuring out which ones are going to feel the best once broken in, compared to the other stores. The Rhapsody that felt great in another store, felt way too soft for me when broken in. So did the Bellafina. Both felt great for a few minutes, but I felt that little stitch in my lower back like I did with the Cloud Supreme, which makes me think they might be a little too soft for the times I sleep on my stomach. That was kind of a disappointment, because I was getting my heart set on getting the Rhapsody. Ironically, the most comfy ones for me at this store were the Deluxe and the Classic. The Classic is the one I returned before, thinking it was too firm. But once broken in, it seems like the Classic would be pretty good. I didn't feel any of the numbness in my arms like I did with my Classic. I'm probably going to get the Deluxe. Just a tad softer than the Classic, so it felt better on my shoulders than the Classic, but not as soft as the Rhapsody on my hips that need a bit firmer. Less expensive too. I also found a Serta 8.5 inch MF mattress that I had not seen at any other stores before. It wasn't bad either. A little softer than the TP Deluxe, and priced at only $550. Haven't seen many reviews on the Serta MF though, so don't know if I want to take a chance on it. |
I found the Rhapsody to be firmer than the Deluxe. Although, I did like them both. In fact, I found them to range from softest to firmest in the following order: Deluxe, Bellafina, Rhapsody. |
Interesting. I do want to go with the firmer of the 3. Just a little firmer than the Classic would be perfect. In this store the order from softest to firmest were Rhapsody, Bellafina, Deluxe. I'm going to try one more store today who has also had them on display for several months. They don't walk on theirs though, like yesterday's store does. |
which one of the two will feel softer to you will depends mostly on the age and condition of the two beds being comparable for a fair accessment. And also potentially on your body type....most people find of similar aged mattress that the Rhapsody is actually softer....both beds are firm in terms of the initial feeling, the finer cell structure in the 7lb foam (top of Rhapsody) seems to react to heat much quicker sometimes giving it the illusion that it is softer. |
Thanks, budgy! The ones at yesterday's store were all about the same age and had all been walked on to break them in. |
I decided to go for the Rhapsody. I was able to ge an incredible deal on a new in the box Rhapsody from a liquidator, so I figured I had nothing to lose, because if it doesn't work out, I know I can sell it and get my money back on it. TP mattresses sell like hotcakes on craigslist in my area. Sold my Cloud Supreme at a profit, so I have no doubt I could do the same with the Rhapsody, as that one rarely comes up on Craigslist. Anyway, I've been sleeping on the Rhapsody for 5 days, and so far so good. It does feel softer in my hips than I expected, but so far no pain there or my lower back. It feels a bit firmer than I'd like in my shoulders and have had a bit of shoulder pain, but this might resolve itself once the bed is broken in. I just hope it doesn't get so soft that my back becomes a problem again. The shoulder pain hasn't been too bad and I can definitely live with it. Not nearly as bad as with the Classic. I had no shoulder pain with the Cloud Supreme, but that one was way too soft on my hips and had major back pain from it. What would be perfect is if I could get a Cloud Supreme on the top half and a Rhapsody on the bottom half. LOL. I haven't tried inclining the head of the bed yet, so I don't know yet if that will be a problem in the hip area with this mattress like it was with the Cloud and the Classic. I wanted to get used to the mattress flat before I attempt the inclined head. So my 5 day report is that I am really loving this mattress so far. Once I fall asleep, I stay in the same position all night, which is rare for me. I used to be all over the bed on other mattresses. Will report again after I've slept on it for a month or so. |
Strange the mattress is causing me pain in arms and shoulders . |
I had some pain in my shoulders at first, but it went away, except for last night when I slept with the head elevated, which caused some shoulder and hip/low back pain. Probably needs to break in some more before I can sleep elevated. The mattress seems to be breaking in pretty fast. I've only slept on it for 8 nights so far. It already felt a bit softer than the store displays I tried, from the first day I slept on it. I live in one of those states where the temps have been between 90-100 most of the summer, and it was shipped from another state with the same temps and kept in their hot warehouse for a few weeks, so I assume the heat has something to do with it being softer. But amazingly I'm not sleeping hot on it at all. Sleeping hot is something a lot of people complain about with the Tempurpedics, but I only had that problem one night, and it was with the Cloud Supreme and at TP pillow. I don't have a husband or BF, so I'm the only one sleeping in this bed, and I tend to sleep on the left side rather than the middle. Just for the heck of it this afternoon I napped on the right side to see if there was a difference, and it was considerably firmer on that side, so I could tell that the side I'm sleeping on hasn't taken very long to break in. So far I'm happy with how it feels when I'm sleeping flat. I hope I can sleep with the head elevated without shoulder or back pain once it's fully broken in. What kind of mattress protector and sheets are you using, Roy? I'm using the Tempurpedic mattress protector and a jersey bottom sheet. The combination of both feels great with this mattress. I use a regular top sheet though, because I prefer that over the jersey sheet on top of me. One night when I pulled the bedding off to wash, I temporarily used a regular quilted mattress protector and regular sheets, and the mattress felt much firmer.
