Trying to assemble a mattress - need help
Hi all- I've spent quite a bit of time perusing this and some other sites, and am trying to learn as much as I can about foam and latex types. I purchased a sleep innovations mattress from Costco two months ago (Novaform Pure Comfort Grand) and while it's comfortable, I think I can do better myself. My biggest complaint is that the Costco mattress has 3" of 4.5lb, 13ild memory foam over a 9" core. It's ok if I sleep on my back, but if I'm on my side it doesn't have enough "give" and it throws my shoulder and neck out of whack. There is a competing mattress (also at costco) that has about 6.5" of 5.5 lb memory foamy (a 3" layer over a 3.5 inch layer...each with supposedly different density), but I'm afraid that would be like sleeping in a hole. My thought is to assemble a mattress with memory foam over a latex base. I would then like to replicate a "pillow top" effect using a topper of super-soft memory foam that I could replace if and when it breaks down. How does this set up look (all from FBM): Base - 6" talalay Latex (firm) Second layer - 3" 5.5lb, 15 ild (firm-the pink memory foam) top layer - 2" 4.5lb, 12ild (soft-the white memory foam) I know the latex will add $$$ to the bottom line price, but I'm thinking that it will provide the entire mattress with extra give without being un-supportive. Could I get away with a 2 or 3 inch latex topper as the third layer, and use a 5 or 6 inch foam core, or am I getting too complicated with this? Any input would be greatly appreciated This message was modified Dec 20, 2008 by billyjoebob

Re: Trying to assemble a mattress - need help
That's what I was afraid of. As I had said, I don't want to feel like I'm sleeping in a pit. Let me ask the following: 1) What would the effect of 4" of 5.5 lb memory foam over a 6" latex core be? Has anyone tried out anything like this? 2) I saw in some other posts about people ordering memory foam components and enclosing them in a costco "cuddle bed". I thought you had to be almost in direct contact with memory foam in order to benefit from the temperature sensitive qualities(i.e. just a thin mattress pad). The cuddle bed has a 2.5" pillow top...does this, or similar padding, defeat the purpose of memory foam? 3) As I mentioned in my first post, Costco sells a "sleep science" ara memory foam bed that has a combined 6.5+" of 5.5lb memory foam. Wouldn't this be way too much? I had been thinking about trying this bed out (considering Costco's outstanding return policy and the high ratings this mattress gets), but hauling 170 pound mattresses up and down stairs and back and forth to the local warehouse is not fun... Not sure if it matters, but my wife and I are both 5'6"-5'8", and both sub 200lbs. She could sleep on the floor and be thrilled, I am a bit more picky and prefer something a bit softer. |
