Spoke to the distributor yesterday that ships out their latex toppers. They ship both talalay and dunlop, and what you get depends on what they have in stock. the ilds seem to vary as well. I made the strong suggestion that they straighten this out and offer a consistent product. Don't know if they will do that. She did say that one could enclose a note requesting one type or another, but that they could not guarantee that they could ship that product.

Thanks for the contact info. I called Jeffco and got what may finally  be the straight dope on the Overstock.com "ECO" latex toppers.

OS gets them from Jeffco Fibers. Jeffco drop ships them so OS never actually sees them. Jeffco sells dunlop and both domestic and imported talalay. Which one you get is entrely random. Jeffco says if you ask for a specific one they will try to oblige, but can make no promises, as inventory varies and they will ship what they have.

This is at odds with what OS has been telling buyers. I, and others on this list, have been assured many times that the toppers are 19 ILD talalay, but numerous reports here say they could be anything. While there have been one or two reports of people getting Latex International talalay, most people who have gotten these toppers seem to have got ones from Latex Green, which means dunlop as that is all LG makes. The Jeffco rep seemed surprised to hear that OS was promising talalay.

So the OS toppers may be a reasonable deal if one is not fussy - all the toppers get very high ratings - but snobs like us are going to hesitate at putting out $100-$200 for a latex one when we don't even know the process or ILD, no matter how much a deal it is. Jeffco does not sell direct except through OS, which makes making special requests problematic as they must go through OS.

I purchased the 1.5 ECO topper a few weeks ago. I think it was dunlop and it was marked as 42 ILD. I'm not that familiar with the ratings of latex densities but it seemed softer. I subsequently returned it and bought a 1 inch from sleepez, which appears to be of much higher quality and softer of course. The OS topper also had a much stronger foam odor. Not bad for the price though, I just wanted something a bit thinner.

42 dunlop is FIRM. trust me. would not give much as a top layer but very good support under something

So I guess what is "staightened out" is that there is no straightening things out when it comes to OS. I used to really like them, now I am very hesitant to buy from them, after they sold FAKE "Venus" foam to everyone and even after admitting it is fake Venus foam, they still sell it and describe it as Venus.

I guess the one good thing is that if you buy the latex and it is Dunlop instead of Talalay you can return it.

I can't imagine a Dunlop topper being soft enough for a topper. Dunlop just doesn't have much give to it in my experience. It's more like the rubber you use for a doormat. Good for a FIRM base, but not a topper. But hey, everyone's different. This is just my opinion based on my experience.

royalpedic uses dunlop in their pillowtops. low ild though. I imagine it is soft enough if aerated like that.

as for os, the only way to order is to call the supplier, ask if they have imported talalay in stock and tell them you are about to place an order specifying that type and to nullify the order if they can not supply it. otherwise you will not know what you are getting

To which one might add, email OS first and ask them to confirm it's talalay latex, so if despite all your other precautions they still send the wrong thing, you will be a position to ask them to pay for the return. If you talk to a phone rep, ask them to send you an email confirming what they have told you.

OS seems to never correct any misinformation, so it is highly likely they will go on telling people its talalay even after the actual supplier has said it is not.

I don't really have much hope that calling Jeffco to find out what is in stock will assure that you get it, so if you are going to have to return it, the more grounds to ask OS to pay shipping the better.

Does anyone know who the supplier was of these latex mattress toppers BEFORE Jeffco?  I managed to get out of OS rep that before 2010, maybe 2009, they had a different supplier, but he couldn't find out name at this late date.  my girlfriend got her mattress topper before they changed and hers is much softer and less bouncy than the Jeffco feels in the pure latex talalay which i just received.  it also has a not so slight rubbery smell that hasn't left in about two weeks since we have it.
