Hi everyone! I have been a long time lurker and this is my first post. Let me share my story with you first as to why I am not asking for a latex or memory foam mattress (which would be my choice). A year and a half ago my fiance and I bought a new Spring Air Four Seasons Ultra Plush mattress from J.C. Penny. We spent about $1,300 for the mattress and loved how amazing it felt in the store. Prior to this, I had a Plush Sealy Posturepedic that was about 10 years old and still was great, but when we moved in together I sold my furniture as my cal king bedroom set was too big for the bedroom. Since my plush Sealy Posturepedic was so comfortable and durable, we though that an ultra plush Four Seasons would be the ultimate luxury. Oh how we were wrong. Fast forward to today... I wake up with increadible back pain every day. I get only about 4 hours of sleep a night because I toss and turn so much because I am so uncomfortable. The mattress that was so great for the first few months now sags multiple inches whenever we are in it. I'm only 120 lbs, but my fiance is about 175 so he sinks much deeper in than I do. Since we have only a queen size, I end up rolling into his hole, which just makes it worse. We tried to exercise our warranty only to find that Spring Air went out of business. JC Penny also only has a 7 day return policy. After doing extensive research into latex/ foam mattresses, we went back to JC Penny, told them our story and they are sending a rep out to inspect the mattress and (with hope) give us the full amount of credit that we paid to select a new mattress. First, how will they inspect my current mattress? I see that the warranty from Spring Air (mind you, this will be JC Penny person who inspects) indicates that the warranty is voided if we get rid of the box spring. We purchased the mattress with the box spring, but subsequently threw it out when we bought a platform bed with slats on the bottom. Will this be problem? Second, how will the actual mattress be inspected? How do they measure the sagging? Is this done with us in the bed or just measuing while the mattress is laying flat in the bed. Other than that the mattress looks brand new in color, etc, no stains, etc. This brings me to my reason for posting. What is the best firm innerspring mattress from the S brands? It appears that the only latex mattress JC Penny offers is the Simmons Natural Care latex mattress, which has received poor reviews. My thought at this point is to get the firmest Stearn & Foster mattress with no pillow top and then buy a 1in. memory foam topper. We plan to use this mattress for us for about 3 years and then use it as a guest bedroom bed. The brands carried are Sealy, Stearn & Foster, and Simmons. Thanks everyone! |

I really hope that they give you credit for your mattress, but if they do it will be out of the goodness of their hearts and not because they have to. S and F screwed me on a mattress after only three months...hurt my low back and they basically said too bad Charlie! If they do, the Signature series of S and F has the best springs, from what I understand. You'd want the firmest and least foam of that line. Tho someone else on the list bought one of the Signatures and hated it, so who knows. If they don't give you an exchange, then by all means, tear into it and perform mattress surgery! You got nothing to lose. Simply cut the top off with an exacto knife, I did mine around three edges and left the headboard side alone to keep it together, then remove foam. Replace as you like, generally about 4" seems like the optimal amount, from what I can glean. Try two inches of each foam I'd guess, or whatever you like. If nothing else, you end up with good topper materials, and the innards of the original foam can be used in a dog bed or something. Good luck! Let us know what happens, if JC Penney is a truly good company or just like the rest. BTW, they measure without you in the bed, it has to sag inches from a ruler laid across the bed. There are TONS of complaints on the web about mattress co's not honoring their warranties. What they do is put a level of some sort across the mattress and then see if it has at least a 1.5" (or something like that) dip in it. It almost never does, because sleeping on a dip that big would KILL your back and would represent gross material defects. So like someone else said, if they give you a return you should consider yourself very lucky. But you can push them, and I would. Tell them you'll post all over the net about them, that even though Spring Air went belly up, JCP should stand behind their products and want to keep their customers happy. Tell them you will stop shopping there and tell all your friends... etc. It sucks, but fighting like this is sometimes necessary to get a fair settlement. Tell them you'll pay for the shipping, etc., but you want a different mattress, this thing is killing you. But then again, depending on the springs it has, it may be as good as any other, and your best bet is mattress surgery. I've heard that the S&F springs are good, but I don't really know. I would avoid pocket coils, personally. I think it's a poor design because they do run the risk of "migrating" and that will kill your back. I think my next springs will be "offset" coils. Get something like that in a super-firm so that you get less poly foam. Then add a latex, not memory foam, topper. Just my 2 cents. Same thing - if you do mattress surgery: about 2-3" of latex of various ild- medium to soft - should to it. If it's a king you can even divide it down the middle and try softer on one side, firmer on the other. Read the mattress surgery threads under "Highlighted Threads". May seem radical but it will give you a better chance at comfort than a mattress as it comes from the store. |

We are still waiting to hear if we will get to exchange the mattress. We are waiting to be contacted by someone who will come out and test the mattress to see if we can return it for credit. They will not refund our money, but we did purchase an additional $110 product warranty when we purchased the mattress set (and a couch at the same time). Frankly, I'm not even sure what the product warranty covers. Depending on what the test guy says, if we can get our money refunded, that would be even better, but it doesn't sound like an option.
Also, just to clarify, this has nothing to do with Spring Air honoring their warranty - this is someone from J.C. Penny who says that they will honor "Spring Air's" warranty since Spring Air went out of business.

And here you see the great scam of our time which mattress makers/sellers pull on innocent consumer victims like yourself. They use shady wording in the warranty to claim that your defective mattress isn't defective-even though it is-and then they say that since the warranty wording, which they wrote to serve their own nefarious interests, supports them, they are not at fault and your mattress is fine. Of course, they arbitrarily decide what 'defective' is not based on what is really defective, but rather based on what will allow them to hardly ever have to exchange defective mattresses under warranty. |
| Yes, if you look around the net you will find MANY instances of SCo's telling people their mattress - which had a big dip in the middle- was not defective because the big dip was not big ENOUGH! Many of these cases are with pillowtops and the mattresses are less than a year old! |
