Why no memory foam? - my DYI example!
Hey all! I've been reading this forum the past few days and have noticed an overwhelming pattern of latex foam is talked about way more then memory foam. I'm finding latex mattresses are very expensive! I'm leaning towards a DYI project that mimics this bed here: http://imemoryfoam.com/product_p/elc3.htm (Queen: $2200) The one thing I can't tell is the ILD of the base foam. But so far, this is what I'm thinking about getting: Latex Base: FoamByMail: FIRM 6" Latex Mattress - $484 http://www.foambymail.com/LatexMQueen.html I would prefer two 3" pieces, but I can't find FIRM latex foam (3") for a reasonable price - any suggestions? I think I would like 36ILD - I see FBM has 32ILD - but I don't know how much of a difference that is in terms of support for a base layer. Middle Layer: Overstock: 2" Sensus 5lb Memory Foam - $140 http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Sensus-Memory-Foam-2-inch-Mattress-Topper/3657734/product.html Top Layer: Overstock: 1" Venus 8lb Memory Foam - $175 http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Venus-Memory-Foam-1-inch-Mattress-Topper/3657739/product.html So, the grand total is: $800 for what appears to be a very nice bed. To get a latex only bed, we're looking at twice that amount. What to you guys/gals think? A bit of info about me: 5'8" 205lbs - I hope the above configuration is supportive enough for me. Thanks for looking! :) -Rob |

Sandman: I spoke to an individual the other day who had tried Celsion and did not find it much of a heat regulator. In fact, they could not tell any difference from regular soft latex, except that it was a little more firm than the soft latex that they were used to. This message was modified Nov 14, 2009 by eagle2

Re: Why no memory foam? - my DYI example!
Thanks for the responses! But I feel the core question I had is being skipped over. I was hoping to hear some opinions about imemoryfoam bed in general and if you think the DIY self seems like a pretty good approximation. How are the parts I have chosen to recreate the bed? Seems like they should be pretty good to me... *shrug* I just check out flobeds again - man, they are expensive. But you're right, I should give them a call and see if they can work with me before I make any moves. I don't have a real preference between memory foam vs latex foam - so I was just trying to build something that is high quality and not super expensive. Thanks! -Rob Update: http://www.sleepez.com/latex-mattress-10000.htm I just saw that... seems pretty close to what I want - 9" of foam that I can configure. But still weighing in at $1500 - $1650 (natural latex) - ~2x the cost of my cheaper-pedic above. foamsweetfoam has a similar setup and price. |

Re: Why no memory foam? - my DYI example!
Hi, you asked for opinions and that's all this is, so take it with a grain of salt. I think your basic idea should work but I'm a little concerned that 3" of memory foam is going to be too much. And I did not find the Venus to be worth the extra money, nor much firmer than the Sensus. If I were you I would not buy the Venus and I'd try to see if the Sensus was enough to soften it up without the Venus. And I would buy 2 X 1" Sensus, not a 2" Sensus. What I have found - and this is just my opinion based on my experience, and YMMV - is that memory foam in general just does not give support, especially after a week or a month or 2 months... depending... But eventually within a relatively short time, it just gives out and starts to hurt my back. I think soft latex is much better, and again, use 1" layers so you can adjust, take one out, put one below the other, whatever... You might try 1" of Sensus and 1" of soft latex and then you can put the Sensus below the latex and vice versa, to see how they feel... Just my humble opinion. |
