23" S for head and shoulder
28"  33ILD for rib cage/lumbar & hips
28"  F for knees and feet

This is 79" for queensize (if I added right).

I am trying to make this simple for me to figure out (math challenged).  But also why can't the rib cage/lumbar and hips have the same ILD.  Your rib cage won't sink, but the hips will.  As for the knees and feet, who cares?  Those are so light this can be firm.  Right?

Just trying to keep it simple.  Also I am a side sleeping and the knees and feet are using the middle area anyway.  There is the problem the legs sink in for me. UGH.

sleeplikeabear sells 14 ILD in the blended talalay.  It is possible they or other places might be able to order it in 100% natural as well.  You would have to make some calls.

However, it seems once you get down to latex that soft, the support is not going to be much better than memory foam.

That's what I would like to test. I've heard otherwise, but not sure if it's true or not. I don't think it would be quite like memory foam because latex by nature is more springy not squishy like memory foam. You may or may not be right that it does not provide support. But for example right now I'm using my 2" wool mattress pad as a topper and it works for me, so maybe an inch of 14ILD latex would be good too!

I agree that it *might* be too much softness and not enough support. I'd just like to find out... Some day maybe I'll buy one...

It would probably better than the cheap low density memory foams.  Vs.  a 5 lb. memory foam, it might be close in terms of support.

I am at the point were 3" of latex does not seem like quite enough (a bit of feeling bottoming out on the firmer support), 4" almost too soft.   However, 1 of the 4" is 4lb. memory foam, so that is the weak link.   I have not tried the wool topper yet.  So, I am not going to make any decisions until I add that.

I thought you were happy with your current configuration?  Are you thinking of trying 1" of latex instead of the wool?  Maybe sleepez would send you 1" of 14ILD as an exchange for the dunlop.  They owe you one, if they haven't given you a refund.

Leo, I personally recommend dividing your Queen into 3 equal lengths, that way you can mix and match them all up and down your mattress. That's what I did and it made it easy to get all kinds of different feels. (In the end I did not like the zoning but...) You can always put the foam you don't like down by your feet, it seems to me. Anyone else try zoning around here these days? Used to be a few people heavily into zoning around here but I don't remember who they were as it's been awhile since people were talking a lot about zoning. Or am I just missing those threads somehow? Eagle, are you using zones with your flobed?

I think 44 is much harder, especially if this is Dunlop. If this is Dunlop, 44 might be like a rubber mat!

I looked at foamonline and I don't see anywhere where it describes what type of latex it is, or the available ild's. Can you copy a link here? Is it cheaper there, or why did you choose them? I don't recall anyone ordering from them but I could be wrong.

I have heard very good things about very soft latex. One knowledgeable guy recommended I try a top layer of very very soft (14ILD which is hard to find) latex which would be good for me, he thought. I never have found any that soft. I'd say the 18ILD is not too soft for a top layer if it's only .9 inches as they usually are. Anything over an inch or inch and a half I think it too much softness for most people. Just me making semi-educated guesses....

Budgy, do you ever see any 14ILD latex?

www.foamonline.com  Click on custom shapes, then put in the measures you want cut, then click on latex, then click on density.  Sandman is the one (I think) that ordered from them, he hasn't received yet (I don't think).  They cut sizes for you.  It doesn't say what it is, Sandman talked to them (again I believe) and told him it is Latex International blended talalay.  I want to try 33ILD (for hip) and softer than 24ILD (for shoulders).  It is $34.16 for 23" long and 30" wide and 1 1/2" thick.  I have extra latex 1 1/2 from O-stock leftovers.  I have firm I will use for the legs, knees to the feet.  I could use 24ILD for the hips, but I already know it just isn't enough cush for my shoulders.  I always had to add memory foam or Brylane Natura talalay topper (which is not really enough).

I think no support is okay for the shoulders, I really would like to toss the hot memory foam, so maybe that would work.

Leo, I thought you already had 2 1.5" (3" total) pieces of pretty firm latex base from overstock (32 ILD?)  I think I would just leave that  from the ribs on down to the feet.  First try just replacing the shoulder (and head if you want just one piece) with something softer, 20-24 (start with just  one1.5" layer ).   You probably still will want at least 1" softer layer over the whole mattress.  So, you would have 1.5" of 20-24 for 23" from top of bed through the shoulders.  32 from ribs down through feet (57" if queen size).  That will give good support for hips and rest of body, but softer in the shoulders.

Unless you are wanting softer in the hips too?  Still not totally sure.

Yes, I have 3" latex; I don't want to cut those they are probably 33ILDish.  I have some cut pieces when I tried zoning before with my 1/2 of the twin latex cut in half.  Those are truly firm, I would say 44 ILD.  So I will have to order 33ILD cut pieces if I want to try again.  Then I will have to order 18ILD for the shoulders.  This way I have most of what I need except 2 pieces that I will order 30" wide so I don't waste so much money ;-) if it doesn't work out.

But then I will end up with 3 layers of 1 1/2", which is 4 1/2", then I would either put the 1" Brylane over that, or put the cut pieces under one of the 1 1/2" layers.  Then it might not be too thick with 4 1/2" rather than 5 1/2" thick.  Though I may still order 44ILD in the talalay blended (small piece) just to see how it is.  As I said I really don't know what the O-stock latex ILD is.  I wonder if foamonline cuts samples.  I really want to see what the higher level blended talalay is like.  I only have 32ILD blended talalay sample, and that still seems soft to me.

Guess you didn't get your cut pieces yet Sandman?

No, I haven't received them yet.  I think they are fairly slow on custom jobs like this.  I believe they said it would  ship in 7-10 business days.

You could always remove one of your 1.5" layers when you put in the zone, especially if they are as firm as you say.

If you cut one of the 1.5" pieces, you can still put them back together under another layer, if you decide you want to use it like one piece again.  The latex pieces seem to hold together pretty well due to the friction.  Obviously would not be able to sell or return after cutting.

I concur that cutting latex and just sitting the individual zoned pieces on the mattress next to each other, it does not shift more than 1/8 and usually not at all. I believe this not to be a problem. When I was doing zoning I had about 12 pieces all the same size x 1" thick of various ILD's, then I could mix and match them in various ways. I just set them next to each other on the mattress and they never shifted. I wrote what they were right on them, with a permanent marker.

As to my wanting to try the 14ILD latex, Sandman: I am completely happy with my current mattress and am not making ANY changes at all. I've never been happier with a mattress since I first came to this forum about 7 or 8 years ago! (Don't believe the date it gives here on when I first joined.) But I guess you could say that necessity is the mother of invention and I came here out of necessity to learn how to buy a good mattress, and that led to my learning DIY mattress techniques, and I've been at this game for so long that it has become somewhat of a "hobby" for me! Now I don't need any more latex and could just leave the forum and go about my business but I find this stuff interesting. So the only reason I would like to try this or that, is "just to see" how it feels. But no, I don't plan to change my mattress at all unless it stops feeling good like it does now! If I were to buy anything new it would be to fix my wife's mattress if and when she needs it, or "just for fun" if I had more money and wanted to try something just for the heck of it.

One reason I like this forum so much, I realize, too, is that people here almost never fight and it's all about mattresses, no other topics are allowed, so it's kind of relaxing for me to come here and not be part of the in-fighting and politics and other stuff that goes on in most other forums. This is just a nice place to visit with nice people! (Admittedly I should move on and do something more productive with my time. And in the past I have disappeared for months or years only to come back when I began to have a mattress issue... which is to be expected, I think. So don't be surprised if I disappear again...)
