That is an interesting design concept, and like most different ideas for mattresses, I'd like to try it some time.

However, in my personal zoned mattress experiments I haven't found it to work well. For me it seems to require that each zone be, not ballpark right, but EXACTLY right and I could never find that correct adjustment of zones.

Others on this forum have used a very soft shoulder area and said it worked for them but when I tried it, it just through my back out of wack.

I wonder what the key might be?

I'd like to hear from anyone who's experimented with zoning and what worked and didn't work for them.

For testing purposes, re-positioning a 2"-4" topper (edge at chest level) to create a recess should allow one to determine if the configuration had merit.

Great idea.  I'm going to give that a try in the next few days.

One unescapable problem with more elaborate solutions such as this is that they more perfectly you make a bed fit in one position, the more pure hell you make it in every other. That's why they try to make beds out of materials that can self adjust rather than fit beds perfectly to the user like giant orthotics!   I suppose if you side slept absolutely ALL the time it might be nice but most side sleepers I know don't, and it looks like it would be very weird in other positions. But I may try to crude attempt to duplicate it, as suggested, just for fun...

Maybe it's good and comfortable for those who have to sleep like that? Like those who are sick or have certain injuries? For healthy people, it's a really strange thing. During sleep, an ordinary person changes his sleep position at least 3-4 times, so the relevance of such mattresses is extremely questionable.
