Returning Rhapsody, Want To Try Latex, Any Help Much Appreciated!

Hello All,

This forum is awesome!  I was very impressed about half a year ago when I first started reading, at that time I had my mind set on trying a Tempurpedic, even though Latex seemed to be what everyone was raving about.  I ended up getting a Tempurpedic Rhapsody (I wanted something firmer because I suffer from lower back pain occasionally, and I've always preferred firmer beds), and after sleeping on it for about 2 months, I will say that, I like it, but I don't LOVE it.  Most mornings when I wake up, there is little to no pain in my back, but just a slight sore feeling.  I thought I might end up loving the mattress, but because I have some doubts about the longevity of the mattress, some worries that perhaps I might wake up with pain someday, and ultimately the cost is so high, I can't say that I love it.  Hence, I've decided that I will be returning it.

Naturally, I came back to this forum to do more research on Latex mattresses.  I know that people here in general love FloBeds and Sleep EZ, can I ask what other online latex mattress companies do you folks like?  I tried looking for a comprehensive list of all the better online mattress companies so that I could do a comparison on my own, but I have yet to find such a list.

The reason I do not want to go with FloBeds or Sleep EZ at this time is that I want to get a mattress that is just one sleep zone, not "split" for a different feeling on each side.  I saw some reviews for Habitat Furnishings (http://www.habitatfutons.com/), I like that their mattresses are so simple, does anybody have any feedback with this company?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can provide!

I don't have any feedback on that co. for you, but I will say that the reason people go with Flobeds is their exchange/return policy and customer service. SleepEZ also has an exchange policy but it's not as good as Flobeds. If it works for Flobeds I wonder why SleepEZ doesn't at least try it. The recommendations from this site alone would seem to be worth their trying it. But in any case, Flobeds wins hands down in the latex mattress "sleep warranty" dept..

As to not wanting it zoned, you can get the same zones on both sides if you want so there would be no noticeable difference unless MAYBE if you are prone to sleeping right in the middle of your large bed. I think Eagle2 said he was glad to have 2 different sides to sleep on because a) it's good to try 2 different sides' configurations, and b) sometimes one feels like having a firmer mattress and sometimes one feels like a softer mattress.

I'm not sure but doesn't Flobeds sell a Full or Queen without separate sides, or do they always divide the mattress in half down the middle?

There is Rockymountainmattress and a few others but since you found this mattress unsatisfactory my feeling would be that you may not like latex either and may want to order from someone who will allow you a refund if necessary.

The other option is to try latex over springs like I am doing: buy a cheap S mattress with good springs, cut 'er open, and put in 1.5" of a medium latex and 1" of soft latex as a start and see how that works for you. It's a lot cheaper than a flobeds.

See my thread on mattress surgery:

Make sure you click ALL to see each post including links to other surgeons' projects.
Note that it is currently not working for me as well as it was but I am thinking it's due to the weak link: my HR foam layer. So I have just ordered a 1" and a 1.5" layer of latex to try and I am very optimistic this will get me back into the right support.

You may want to look at foamsweetfoam too.  They use 100% natural Talalay.  I don't think they split the mattress, but I am not totally sure about that.  Their pricing is pretty good.  Sleepez and Flobeds might be able to send you pieces not split as well.  You should ask them.

Yes. I'm almost positive you can order a non split from Sleep EZ. At least that was the case with the Queen I ordered.

Thanks for all the feedback.

FloBeds definitely sounds to be the company with the best customer service after reading all the good things that people have written in this forum, and I definitely consider excellent customer service to be very important.  I might just call them up to see if they have an option to get something that isn't split into separate sleep zones.

Thanks jimsocal for the ideas.  Unfortunately, I'm not the mattress surgery type of person.  I checked out Rockymountainmattress, it seems they don't have latex mattresses, only memory foam.  And yes, I definitely want to buy from a company where I can have a trial period, to me it's a no brainer if such an option exists, especially when buying something with so much "iffyness".

Thanks sandman for the suggestion with foamsweetfoam.  They look to be a pretty good store, and actually they are very close to where I live, so I can go down to their showroom and check out the mattresses.  The only thing I found that I don't like is, their return policy includes an 18% return fee.

MichLee, you are right, Sleep EZ does offer a non-split as well as a split version, I realized that earlier today when I was going through their website.  Overall, they seem the most appealing to me so far, though there are some inconsistencies/errors on various pages of their website.  Could you give me some feedback of your overall experience with them and possibly the details of your purchase?

This is my research of the different companies so far:

* FloBeds - trial: 90 days, return cost: shipping, firmness exchange: yes, warranty: 20 years (10/5/5), price range for queen: $1799-$2699
* Sleep EZ - trial: 90 days, return cost: shipping, firmness exchange: yes, warranty: 20 years (10/10), price range for queen: $1095-$1975
* Foamsweetfoam - trial: 60 days, return cost: 18% and shipping, firmness exchange: once within 30 days, warranty: 30 years, price range for queen: $1299-2099
* Habitat Furnishings - trial: 180 days, return cost: shipping ($75), firmness exchange: n/a, warranty: 20 years (3/year-by-year), price range for queen: $1299-$1999

Right now, I'm leaning towards Sleep EZ with the Select Sleep 8500 queen (not sure about the blended latex versus 100% natural latex yet), with somewhat of a firm base and a softer top layer, and matching foundation.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

gabuc: I believe SleepEZ has a one layer exchange during the 90 days only. After that you must buy any other layers.

Sleep EZ 90 Day Trial and Return Policy

We have a 90 day layer switch out policy on latex mattresses . This means you may return any one of the layers in your mattress in exchange for a layer of different firmness. We pay shipping of new layer to you, and you pay shipping back. Shipping is approximately $30 depending on location. To make sure you are not inconvenienced in any way, the process is as follows: notify us of the desired firmness, we ship new layer to you, and you return switch out layer to us in the same box. Subsequent layer replacement would be at current price of 2.8" layer, plus shipping.

Only Flobeds has unlimited exchanges for the 90 day "Test Rest" You pay only the return shipping back to them for any layers.

Eagle2, I did many exchanges during my 90 days since I made the bed way too soft for me at first.  I am glad I had gone with FloBeds so I could get my bed to be to my comfort level. Each side of my bed is similar with my left side a tiny bit firmer for when I want a more firm side sometimes when I wake up in the morning to go to the bathroom and come back to bed wanting the other side of the bed. Both sides are very comfortable for me. I like the split cores feeling if I meet someone one day, they can move the layers around to suit them or just buy one layer to make the bed more to their liking. The split layers make the layers easier to move around and with the topper over them, I do not fill the split in the middle.

I also watched whenever there was a sale going on during the 90 days and I informed Dave via email and a phone call and that created two credits to credit card making my bed less than Sleepies since one of the discounts was the  slat bed frame for free.

I sleep with natural latex pillows that I bought at Overstock since I wanted a standard size pillow.
