BACKGROUND: Okay, a little background on me for those who don't know me: I have been in multiple car accidents, have neck, back and shoulder issues that chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture have not been able to solve, have had many tests done, etc, and no relief. I may even have fibromyalgia or arthritis too. So no mattress is going to make me feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud! (I wish it weren't true but that's the reality of it.) I have been experimenting with making my own beds with all kinds of different foams for about 7 years after realizing the CRAP foam that the "S" manufacturers use to make their mattresses.. My last experiment was HR Foam over Sealy Springs (from a mattress I did surgery on), and various toppers of latex and/or memory foam, cuddlebed, etc... I cut my HR foam pieces into thirds, length-wise, and in one inch thick pieces times two so I could vary the firmness of each section of my body: upper, midsection and lower. But as of about 2 weeks ago I looked closer at the situation and came to the conclusion that the Sealy springs were shot (yes, after only 4-5 years), even though I only currently weigh 180 and for part of those 5 years I only weighed 160-170. Soooo, I began to look for a new mattress. THE REVIEW: I liked what I read at overnightmattress.com. They use a new (to me, anyway) kind of foam called "M-grade" and they use a different type of memory foam that is supposed to be better than ones I've tried in the past. What I mostly liked was their absolutely no risk guarantee with a 90 day sleep trial - they pay shipping to you and back to them if you don't like the mattress! They have many variations on their mattresses to choose from but frankly I think all of their mattresses -except the one I ordered and only one other- all have too much soft foam on top of the "M-grade" foam core. So, for $299 (on sale) I bought the model that has the least amount of soft foam on top, which is 2" of memory foam. This is glued to a 5" "M-grade" firm core/base. The shipping was very quick and the mattress was very well packed. I was impressed that for free shipping, it got here in about 4 shipping days. I've paid a lot for shipping mattresses and foam, before, from other companies, only to have it take 2-3 weeks to arrive. So to get it shipped free and have it arrive in 4 days is impressive! So when the foam arrived, I threw out the Sealy springs, put the HR foam I have been using into the closet, and put the overnightmattress.com mattress on top of my Sealy box springs, with no other elements: no cuddlebed or any other topper, just sheets to protect the mattress. (Note: the mattress does have that memory foam smell and I let it air out by a window for the whole day. Even though I have asthma and allergies sometimes, it did not bother me that night when I slept on it.) The mattress comes with a thin cloth cover that does not cover the entire bottom of it but covers the top and looks okay and is soft enough not to feel rough or bothersome. My initial reaction was that the mattress is too soft, too cushy. My experience with memory foam in the past has not been good (I've even tried Tempurpedic) and I was skeptical about this one but I decided to try it. I figure if it is really too soft and if I like the 5" M-grade foam core, I can *maybe?* just rip off the memory foam and put some HR foam on top of the core. Well, I was surprised that the first night I slept better and woke up less sore than I have for months. BUT, I figured after a few nights, the memory foam would get even softer and I'd still end up hating it. But so far, after about 5 nights on it, it is still comfortable and certainly if it stays comfortable for the entire 90 day trial period, I will be thrilled and sing the praises of overnightmattress.com mattresses. So far: Hallelujah! However, my experience over the past 7 years or so of foam experimentation is that even the best foam always softens up too much, dips or wears out just a bit, and in a short time has to be adjusted to being firmer. But if it's too firm, that's not good either. So it's very difficult to find a balance. (That's why I went to a "component" type zoned approach with my last HR foam experiment. And that did work pretty well, and at this point I think the weak link in that experiment was the crappy Sealy springs. And from what I know now I'd have been better off putting the HR foam components over the box spring instead of using springs from the mattress under it.) So, this is not a final review, but I will say that I am impressed so far with overnightmattress.com's 7" medium firm foam mattress for $299. This is a twin. The Eastern and Cal Kings right now on sale are $549. You really cannot go wrong with a 90 day completely no risk guarantee. I looked up their record with the BBB and they have only had a two unresolved complaints since they've been in business and if you've ever been in business you know that this is a very good record. The only issue with returns seems to be that you have to be very careful in packing it back as well as they packed it and not allow it to get damaged in shipping. We simply kept all the packing materials and noted how they packed it (vacuum compressed) and if we need to return it we will attempt to pack it the same way. I don't expect a problem with that; they seem to want to make an effort to satisfy their customers. I will update this mattress as the 90 days rolls on. I will not be surprised if I either have to send it back, because the foam softens up too much or if I decide to keep it but tear off the 2" memory foam and replace that with a firmer memory foam or perhaps 1" of fimer HR foam and 1" of firmer memory foam. (Of course, that would void the warranty.) |

| Jim--Glad to hear your trial is going well so far. I see that the M-grade foam has an ILD of 41. Can you give us an idea of how firm that foam feels? |

As to how firm the M-grade foam feels, no I cannot tell you at this point. They have glued the 2" of memory foam on top of the M-foam and so it feels very soft, too soft, in fact, when I lay on it at this point. At some point in the very near future I may try turning it over and sleeping just on the M-foam but I have not gotten quite to that point yet. As I suspected it would, the 2" of memory foam on top seems to be getting softer each night and now is beginning to feel too soft. But I will wait and sleep a few more nights on it before I declare it for sure "too soft". If and when I do declare it "too soft" I will turn it over and try sleeping on the M-foam and if that is too firm by itself I will add a very soft 1.5" latex topper on top of it and try that. And then if that doesn't work I'll try a 1" memory foam topper. In either case, if and when I turn it over (most likely within a few more days) I will give you a report on how firm the M-foam feels. |

| Jim, I'm being lazy because it's late, but when you first posted I went to the overnightmattress site and I seem to remember that they had a mattress available that was just the M-grade foam without the MF laminated to the top. I was wondering why you just didn't get that one since you certainly have enough foam around to make your own comfort layer and it's always easier to replace a layer that's gone south when it isn't attached to the rest of the mattress. |

Hi Princesspea, I did finally turn the mattress over because the 2" of memory foam on top is too soft (for ME).So I can tell you now that the ILD 41 (if that's what it is) of the M-Foam is much softer than the 42-45ILD HR foam we have been using. I would say that the M-Foam feels more like a 35-38ILD foam. By the way, I think this $300 twin overnight foam mattress I have is not at all a bad mattress, as long as you stick with the one I bought with only 2" of soft foam on top. Many they sell have 3-5" of soft foam on top and I cannot see how that could be good for anyone! But the 2" - though too soft for me - might not be too soft for the average person without back problems. In fact I would recommend this mattress to anyone looking for a cheap but quality mattress. It's probably better than 95% of the S-mattresses sold! I will report back after I sleep more nights after having turned it over so the 2" of memory foam is now on the bottom of the mattress (i.e; it is now firmer) |

| Thanks for your report. Your assessment of the foam could be right. I went back to their site and saw, in a different place, that the ILD is 32. I'm currently trying a trizone airbed that has 2 inches of memory foam over a 2.5 inch five zone foam layer all zipped into a mattress cover. Not sure what I think of the 2 inches of memory foam as it is complicated by the air underneath. I will probably take if off and experiment with some other foam over the air. Looking forward to your continued reports. |

I will have to ask them. On one page it says the support core is ILD 41 and in another place it says it is ILD 32. This is from one page: Base foam or support foam is equally as important to the comfort of the mattress as the memory foam is. The density of the base foam will determine how long the mattress will last, and the firmness will determine the amount of support it gives your body. The M-Grade base support foam has a density of 2.0 lb and an ILD of 41. Typically, average mattresses have support foams with densities ranging from 1.5 lb to 1.8 lb, 1.8 lb being for nicer mattresses. It's rare to find mattresses with base foams more dense (or better quality) than this. That's why we've decided to provide this quality. And for this reason, we can offer a 20 year warranty." Just updating re my overnightmattress.com mattress. This refers to their medium-firm basic model which I bought, which has 2" of memory foam on top and a 7" core of "M-grade" foam on the bottom which I believe to be 32ILD although in one place on their site it says it is 42ILD. From experience I believe it is indeed 32ILD, though. Okay, so as I said before, I turned the mattress over because after a week or two the memory foam was just too soft for me and I began to get a back ache from sinking in too much into the mattress. After I turned it over I tried it for a couple nights like that, just sleeping right on the core and it was okay but actually just due to coincidence I had to get something out of the closet and ran across my old thick 100% wool topper and decided I'd try it on top of the M-grade mattress. Since the topper is a king and I'm sleeping on a twin, I just doubled it up. Although it is about 1 and 1/2 " thick so doubling it makes it 3", the fact is that it flattens out quite a bit so it probably comes out to less than 2". (By the way, this is all sitting on top of my old Sealy Fenway box springs. I don't think the box springs matters much either way, it is very firm and has almost no give to it. I am using it just to keep it up off the floor.) Well, this is the best sleep experience I've had in over 2 years, maybe 4 or so years... Right now it is fantastic, and I have actually been able to sleep straight through for 9-10 hours sometimes, something I have not been able to do in years. My only concern is that the M-Grade foam may soften up too much. If it does soften up within the next 60 days or so, I can still return the mattress as they have a 90 day sleep trial with free return shipping at overnightmattress.com. IF it gets too soft, what I will do is try to find a supplier for M-Grade foam and see if I can get something that truly is in the range of 42ILD. Then if that is too firm I will try putting a very firm 1 to 1 and 1/2" thick memory foam or latex topper on top of it. For me I think the key was getting rid of the springs. Springs just don't seem to be good for my back. What amazes me though is how soft the current configuration is. When I sit on the side of the mattress it sinks down like crazy and if I were shopping for a new mattress and sat on something like this I'd say "No! No way! This is TOO soft!" But the fact is that when I sleep on it it is NOT too soft and it feels great! At this point I highly recommend overnightmattress.com's 9" mattress. I think most people would be fine with the 2" memory foam topper that it is meant to have on top. But it's nice that if it IS too soft, you can turn it over as I did and maybe that will work for you, as it is working for me. I would warn against buying any of their more expensive, more "luxurious" mattresses, however, because I THINK those would indeed be too soft because they make them more "luxurious" by adding more inches of memory foam, which I think is just too much softness for the average back, or at least for the average back that has back pain issues. | JIm-Did you give up on your overnight mattress? If so, did you encounter any problems returning it? I'm trying one right now--the Aloe Vera. I didn't like it as originally set up so I've taken off the memory foam and am experimenting with different foams and toppers. That 9 "of M-grade foam is pretty hard! I've seen omalon as the core for some memory foam mattresses, but I don't recall seeing an omalon core by itself. |

I ordered a memory foam topper from overnightmattress.com and the website said there was very little or no smell associated with this topper. When I received the product, I could smell a horrible, pungent chemical smell like polyurethane. I figured the smell would go away in a short while - so I installed it on my mattress. I left my room and returned in about 3 hours. My *entire* room smelled horrible - just like the topper. My wife and I went to bed that night and the smell was *so* bad that my wife couldn't even sleep. In the morning, she was so sick she had to vomit. The next day, I took the topper outside and let it air out for an entire day. At the end of the day, the topper smelled exactly the same. Horrible! This company and the product they sell is a health hazard and an insult to a healthy lifestyle. To make matters worse, Dock 1 (Overnight Mattress) refused to refund the entire amount for the topper and insisted on charging me 20% restocking fee and all shipping charges! I complained to the company and they held their stance on the fees. I ended up having to charge back the difference this company refused to refund. What a lousy company! |

I have similar experience with overnightmattress.com, will never buy there again.
First their special offer countdown on the website resets itself. Bad sign. Then they could not deliver at the agreed date, told me some hillarious story, had to wait another two weeks. They NEVER committ themselves to a delivery date, again with a hilarious story. So I cancelled my order, of course they could not say when my CC would be credited. I finally called my Credit Card company to issue a dispute, because two weeks after the cancellation date I still do not have my money back. BEWARE! This message was modified Mar 22, 2012 by sumu
