Second hand Memory foam Mattress acquired - wanna change top-foam.

Hi everyone,

We just picked up a set of two-piece Memory Foram Mattress (for my sister) made by a company called "Northern Feather". This was supposedly an expensive mattress.

The bottom is a dense foam, 6-7" deep, and it is "Made in Italy". The top part is 2.25" foam with a zipper cover. I couldn't get more info from the retailer or person we acquired it from.

For sanitary reasons we would like to change the top foam, and got the following questions:

- Shall we even bother? Isn't memory foam totally hypoalergenic, dust mite, bacteria free? Do they age and need to be replaced anyways?

- Stick to memory foam or change to a latex top?

- If memory foam, what brand/model/density do you recommend for a average height woman, weighing 140 pounds or so?

- If latex, what brand/model/density do you recommend for a average height woman, weighing 140 pounds or so?

Also, just one other note, we're not mattress nut! ;) so rather pick a product and be done with it. I see a lot of folks mix and match a lot of different layers of foam... we just don't have the patience and time for that.

Thanks a bunch!

Well, I don't think there is a lot of support on this forum for memory foam other than putting about an inch on top of something too firm.  Even if there were, I don't think you can really put latex on top of memory foam too well.  I've tried 2 inches of memory foam on top of a firm latex and it just got me a sore back.  I would stick to 1 inch at the most personally.  My preference is latex all the way and I wouldn't include memory foam.  I think there are some supporters of all memory foam, but not much on layering.

Good luck.

Thanks, then where can I find a good quality Latex topper? 2" max. There are SO MANY brands and different products and none are really well known to me to figure out marketing vs. truth! ;)

Here is a thread that may be of interest:    http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/latex-toppers/16314-0-1.html

I have personally purchased from Sleepez and Sleeps Like a Bear.   Both places sold me excellent latex toppers.  I don't think you would go wrong with either place.

BHSHOP20 code will give you 20% off and there is free shipping for signing up with BrylaneHome's newsletter.  I have their 1" Talalay latex topper and I feel it is a perfect feel with no seam in the Queen size topper that was quality throughout.  I do not know anything about this 1.5" all natural latex topper they are selling but you can email and ask them what ILD (softness) and if it is Talalay Latex.
