I've been trying to ask the question as to whether very thick inner springs with 2' of latex on top is to firm for side sleeping. It's been hard getting direct answers, so let me just answer my own question now through hard-learned experience.

The answer is, simply, YES.  Very thick, strong springs with 2" of latex is WAY too firm for side sleeping.

I'm switching my new mattress out and have a LOT of shoulder, back and neck pain.

I hope I've made this clear to anyone wondering about side sleeping.

Can you tell us which springs you have - type and gauge?

And you had ONLY 2" of latex on top, or on top of other foam, like the way the mattress came?

I am using Bonnell 12.5 gauge springs and I think I agree with you. I wish I'd have bought different springs for my DIY mattress surgery project.

Well hey there, Jim...I don't know the gauge, but it had to be close to as low as you can get.  I only know they were made by Legat. Very low count.  But one thing i realized is that I don't weigh much so maybe I couldn't get the springs to move at all, I was sort of just lying on top of them (ouch!)  It was this one:

But I tell you, I got the pocket coil with nothing but 2" of latex (here it is here), and I'm in HEAVEN!  Also Legat steel, not overseas-made.  I have faith that the coils will hold up for me - I'm only 125 lbs and I think without the PU it will be fine.

These people wsitched it out in 48 hours with no hassle, no cost, drove 45 min to the city to my 4th floor apt where there's literally no parking!  I tipped them well.  Very happy with this company's customer service.

Hey, Jim - one other suggestion:  Something I'm doing is going to the chiropractor for adjustments (not "cracking", just the minor thingy they use on backs these days to gently adjust).  remember our backs adjust when we get a new bed and it's not always a bad thing.  I know you already know that, but we on this site sometimes forget even the simplest "Sleepy's" advice!  LOL
