You guys, I am so thrilled. Last night I took everything off the new mattress...wool topper and latex topper. Put on a cotton fitted sheet and bedded down. I slept. I wasn't hot. I didn't sweat. I didn't have pressure points, or knobs (from the wool topper) digging into my legs. I didn't sink in too far, I didn't bounce around on top. It was awesome. I AM still getting used to my new Oxygen pillow..so still adjusting to that. I woke a lot during the night but more out of habit than anything..I was not uncomfortable, I wasn't waking due to hot spots...how awesome is that! I'd wake up and think, "wow, I'm not hot. I'm so comfortable.." and got too excited to go back to sleep, lol. Thanks to gunman for the gentle reminder that new mattresses take time to break in. It was his post that got me thinking that's just what I"m going to try to do--quit trying to make it work w/ toppers which weren't working, and try it on it's own. My mattress is less than 3 weeks old. It could use more breaking in but even now it's pretty darn good, for a new Simmons BR. Now my problem is..I do want to protect the mattress ..but I do not want to add layers of ANYTHING to mess up how this feels. I wonder if just another fitted sheet will be enough to protect it from the usual body greases, etc. I don't need waterproofing or anything like that. Here's hoping I can continue to sleep on this as nature intended. |
| Congrats! I hope it keeps working for you. It wouldn't hurt to put another sheet over it for additional protection. Some people use a fitted jersey sheet instead of a mattress pad. That is smooth and stretchy and should not affect the feel. Not sure if it would make it any warmer though. |

Any thoughts? There does not seem to be much of a market for a simple fitted cover. I guess people just use and extra sheet or 2 if that is what they want. Don't you have a simple mattress pad? Maybe try it to see if it causes any issues. |

I think the mattress is 8" but thanks for pointing that out, I'd have to recheck the size. And you're right, a bit of a pain to take off to wash. No, believe it or not I don't have a regular mattress pad anymore. I recently returned one I was sometimes using, to Lands End because the seams were painful (and it was too big for my mattress). Before that, I had for eons a really nice Lands End pad that they no longer make (of course!) So with all the fun and games of topper swapping in the last year or so, I haven't had a decent regular mattress pad to throw in the mix. I did try one from Overstock but what a piece of junk..it's going back. (way too much polyester, even though it touted a cotton cover). The seam problem is what I'm up against now re: mattress pads. I want and need something smooth and since I'm liking the feel of my mattress, not much fill. Most of the better pads I've seen online that aren't covered in seams and/or have too much fill, are still over $200..which makes me consider the nicest one I've yet seen, at the store nearby that sells the Berkeley Ergonomics mattresses. It's a stretchy cotton cover. BUT...I think I might just try doubling up on sheets for the time being and save some money for a change. Might try the jersey sheets. |

Update. Since I first posted I was sleeping on the mattress straight w/ just a fitted cotton sheet and it was pretty good. Then I thought it might be nice to have a tad of padding so I threw on my old PU eggcrate 1-2" (under the sheet), last night. Oddly, I woke up hot (not sweaty, but hot). Odd because I used the same eggcrate for years on my old mattress and never got hot..usually under a Lands End mattress pad though..so maybe that's the difference. Or maybe the new mattress has material that doesn't breath as well as the old one. Whatever the cause, I woke hot, and didn't much care for it. I think I'm going to try an all-cotton (filling too) mattress pad from Lands End. The one I used to have wasn't all cotton (I don't think) but they don't make that one anymore. What I like is everything is returnable there, even if you've used it, washed it., etc. Worth a shot because I really did like the feel of having the eggcrate as opposed to nothing..(my ear was thanking me. I'm a sometimes stomach sleeper and the bottom ear gets crushed if too hard) but I need to protect from the heat issue. And so it continues.............. |

Thanks Phoenix. That is a nice selection. However, I don't want (a) waterproof; (b) diamond pattern or any pattern with a lot of stitch lines; (c) stretchy polyester sides; (4) polyester fill.. That rules out a lot of them. Lands End has excellent quality bedding in my experience, so I'll happy with my choice. (We'll see if I stay happy, lol). |

I saw that from your previous posts but I noticed they had a bunch near the bottom (above the wool ones) that were pure cotton with light stitch patterns and different thread counts so I thought I'd post it. You can order a sample piece from snuggledown.com. That helped me make the decision. It is not dense, and has some stretch to it.
