Only YOU can determine which configuration of mattress components satisfy YOUR personal comfort preferences. It is ALWAYS a trial & error process. So stop with the SO CONFUSED tactic and help yourself by trying some out!

I agree with sager66. Turn off your caps key, and plug into the search facility on this form. There are all kinds of recommendations to be found at this website. Assimilate some of that knowledge, then go and try out some beds.

If you're still confused after doing that, asked some specific questions based on your new found knowledge then possibly we can help you some. But we will need more personal information than you have provided. Being in pain from herniated discs is no fun. But we can't do anything about that. That requires a doctor.

Go out and buy a cheap mattress with quality springs, ultra firm.
Then cut open the mattress, take out the cheap foam and replace it with 1" layers of various quality foams. 2-3 layers of high quality HR foam and/or latex foam and/or Sensus memory foam should do the trick.
Problem is, almost all mattresses have cheap pu foam in them that does not support the body. This cheap foam needs to be replaced with good foam. It's almost impossible to buy a spring mattress that does NOT have cheap foam in it.
That's why I advise mattress surgery:
