Stomach sleeping on latex - what top layer depth, ILD?

Hi, everyone.

We have a new Flobed that we're having a heck of a hard time getting right in terms of comfort.

My side is Super-Firm / X-Firm / Firm (bottom to top) over the fir slat foundation (tried the Euroslat and hated it, so thanks to Dave and Dewey for helping us with a conversion kit!).

We replaced the top convolute layer of latex previously (before changing the foundation) as 100% latex was too 'bouncy'.  Tried the 2'' of Sensus Memory Foam instead (inside the nice cotton case that encompasses the whole mattress).

The bed feels nice and comfortable, but I CANNOT sleep on my stomach without lower back pain in the AM.  (Feels like my lower back is 'caving' in a bit when I lay on it).

So, I'm wondering - is 2'' of Sensus Memory Foam too much if it's underneath the cotton Flobed cover with a cotton filled, 'quilted' mattress pad (no idea what the ILD or actual thickness of this is as it varies across the surface of the pad) over it for stomach sleeping?

Would we be better off with either the Flobed latex convolute layer, or getting 1'' of memory foam (maybe from FBM)?  We could also take off the quilted cotton pad and replace it with a Protect-a-Bed (which we also have but don't like - it feels too much like a 'hospital bed' and is a bit scratchy and plasticky feeling underneath the sheets).

Thanks for any and all help..we just can't seem to find the 'right' firmness with this thing no matter what we try.

PS: I'm about 175 lbs and 5'10 and wife is around 105 and 5'4.

I'm no foam expert... but as I see it... you need more core firmness to hold your hips up.  Something to notice about foam... while on your front, if you put your legs together to concentrate their weight, they will sink lower and relieve some of the back bending at your hips.  Conversely, when you sprawl them out and about like you want to... they will float higher and increase your lower back strain.  More core firmness (or zoned foam) may reduce this affect.

And be sure that the mattress foundation is FLAT and does not sag... deviations here translate directly through the foam to your body posture.  If unsure, try using the floor.

You could try xf-xf-sf or xf-f-sf (top-to-bottom), and put the Latex topper back on for pressure relief.

And take 2 Ibuprofen at bedtime while debugging to resist the downward spiral!

Measured the Sensus memory foam from Flobeds, and it's more like 2.5'' than 2.  So, still wonder if that's too much memory foam for stomach sleeping?

Also tried to swap my XF and F top and middle layers last night, so that (bottom to top) the bed was Super-Firm, Firm, X-Firm.  Kept the Sensus on top.  No joy.  Bed felt (in a weird way) too hard yet not supportive enough at the same time.

Really getting frustrated trying to get this right!

I do have 2'' of FBM Pink 5 lb memory foam that's on the other bed at this point.  I may swap this out with the Sensus, or swap out the Flobed convolute latex layer for the Sensus tonight.

The 2'' FBM works good on a traditional S&F mattress we have in the other room (even for stomach sleeping).  So, not sure if the issue is the support of the cores underneath.

I definitely think I'm gonna switch the Firm/X-Firm layers back, though.  Having a 'softer' layer underneath a firmer one in a Flobed doesn't really seem to work - at least to me.

Anyone else have an opinion on whether memory foam is suitable for stomach sleeping when it's on latex cores?

All I know at this point is that I NEED. SLEEP!  And am not getting nearly enough of it tossing and turning all night on cores that I can't seem to get right for the life of me..

I think you need a firmer core.  xf-f-sf was only if you did not have xf-xf-sf.  Also, squeeze each layer with one hand to roughly compare their relative firmness to be a little more sure you know what you are working with.

You can simulate a firmer core by inserting a sheet material stiffener under the top firm layer at your hip area.. such as a piece of closed-cell sleeping pad.  It cannot be under your stomach or else this will push it down more.  The stiffener will distribute your weight, holding your hips higher to reduce the caving in.  This is only a short term test because you'll feel it in the foam.

Be sure the platform is level/not sagging.
