So you have 1/2 inch of memory foam buried inside the mattress, and about 3" of soft polyfoam over the coils.

It is almost certain that like all soft polyfoam used by the major manufacturers in the top layers of their mattress, that it will begin to break down and lose it's qualities very quickly. The pillowtop version would be even worse. This will lead to depressions in the mattress and even worse the foam itself will lose the qualities that make it feel good in the beginnning. How quickly this will happen will depend on who uses it and how it's used but in the worst cases you are talking about months and otherwise a very few years. I would personally consider all mattresses of this type to be "throwaway" mattresses meaning that the price you pay for it makes you happy to throw it away after a very few years.

These issues will not be covered by warranty since the foam will still have just enough resilience when there is no weight on the mattress to come back just enough that the unweighted depressions will be less than the warranty. The breakdown of the qualities of the poly itself is considered "normal".

So if the price you are paying reflects that you will only get a few years use out of it and even less of comfortable use ... then it may be worth it. I personally wouldn't touch it. There are many places you can get a higher quality mattress for much less than the prices on the W hotel website.

We're in MD. Would you be able to recommend specific stores and/or mattresses we might consider instead?

The W would have cost us just under $800 for a king. But we could go higher if we found a mattress that wouldn't break down as quickly.

Have you had a chance to lay on the W hotel mattress? The price you are quoting for a king is less than the prices I've seen for it but IMO it's still not low enough to buy it as a "throwaway. I'm assuming that is mattress only as well.

Maryland has one of the fewest number of mattress manufacturers in the US and some of what they have are Sealy and Serta manufacturing outlets.

What city are you in and I'll take a look. Some of the manufacturers in other states could be available reasonably close by (Lemoyne for example is available in MD).
