I chose the Wal-Mart Premier Platform Bed Frame as the base for my DIY PU Foam/Latex Hybrid King Mattress. Here's a look at what this frame is all about. We ordered the frame from WM's website and used the free Ship-to-Store option since we live very close to a local WM. Total cost was $114.49 ($107.00 plus 7% sales tax). Upon picking it up, I could hear a couple loose items in the box when I moved it around. The box is a nice size but weighs about 70 lbs. I did not try to carry it. I simply slid it along the floor to get it into the bedroom. Here are some pics...
Frame in box...
Top of box opened. Contents were nicely packed with cardboard layers between all separate metal parts...
One side assembled (front), other side still folded (upper right), three center pieces stacked (upper left)...
Foldability makes moving pieces around very easy...
Two quibbles: 1. Missing one wingnut... (I was very fortunate to immediately find one in my very limited supplies that fit!) 2. Hand tightening the wingnuts became painful after a while. Thankfully an adjustable crescent wrench solved this problem perfectly and allowed much tighter assembly than could be achieved by hand...
Both sides assembled...
Fully assembled with three center pieces put into place (no tools required for this step). Picture is distorted near front corners due to wide angle. There is no bend or distortion in the actual frame... it's perfectly straight. Sorry my camera couldn't do it justice...
For pics of this frame with a mattress on top, see my DIY PU Foam/Latex Hybrid King Mattress forum page. Summary: I am very impressed with this frame. It can be assembled in 30 minutes. It is lightweight but obviously very intelligently designed with twelve evenly spaced legs, lots of narrow, tall support tubing (the height gives it rigidity), and evenly spaced "wire" spanning the entire frame (unlike this dubious frame also available from WM for actually more money). It is easily moved when not loaded, but cannot be easily moved (as far as I can tell) once it has a heavy mattress on it. With twelve legs bearing the load, however, I imagine it could be successfully moved while loaded if one simply used furniture sliders. I have not tested this, however. Tonight my wife and I will spend our first night on this frame and my new mattress. I will give performance updates over time. |
