Can anyone tell me how they feel, and more importantly, do they have any odor to them? also is it better to order from a place that gets their latex from Sri Lanka or Europe?. thanks in advance. additional details: these toppers are going to be for my kids. |
I just got my 3" and 1" topper from Foam by Mail today and they look just like the pictures in this thread: I am very pleased with what I have received from them. It does have an odor to it, but I don't know how to describe it. I also bought some conventional foam, so that may be what I am smelling. They are "airing out" now, until the rest of my parts get here on Monday. This message was modified May 22, 2010 by laredo7mm

Overstocks toppers, from reports I've read, are a "grab bag". You get god-knows-what brand and ILD, they're all screwy. Some got very good LI brand latex and others got godknowswhat... And some look like returns (i.e.; used). Then, they sold Venus memory foam that is NOT Venus memory foam... They've gone very far downhill in my opinion. I used to recommend them but now I'm wary of them. |
The 2" topper I got from O-stock was labeled Latex Green 15ILD and was beautiful, no flaws. This is Dunlop latex, so it is firm. It is on the bottom of my layers. No way can you sleep on this as a top layer unless you are over 250 lbs. It is a good bottom layer however. The 2 other O-stock layers I bought of the 1 1/2" layers were not labeled, but were softer than the LG 15ILD, just a tad, no major flaws (it is Dunlop). The only flawed one I had was the 23ILD Latex International (labeled obviously) that had a 6" x 1-2" flaw, as in missing latex. So that was not a good piece, but it opened my eyes to this wonderfully soft layer. If you don't mind taking a chance on latex and trying it out, it is cheap, and it is doing me a great service as my bottom 5" layers. So I can't complain. Yes, it is a grab bag, and some are labeled, most are not. I used the 1 1/2" 23ILD piece under the 2" 24ILD and it is fine, I just stuffed pieces of latex in the gap, and I don't feel it. Since I had no clue what I needed or wanted, it has worked for me in the end. But it did take 2 years and lots of work on my part. I hope people start googling this, because I am not going to keep repeating this, LOL. Since I have now fixed my mattress (it only took 2 years), I will not be visiting as much here. Since adding the 2" 24ILD LI natural talalay from RMM, that was also a beautiful queen size layer also, I am completely happy now. I do need to find a thin cotton layer for the top to keep it cool however. Also I am glad Rocky Mountain Mattress does not take returns on toppers because I did not want to risk getting a returned layer sent to me! Also they are cheaper and if you have a good idea what you want it is worth it. P.S. The search on this forum does need some improvement because it is hard to find the exact thread you are looking for. I am looking for my posting about the fabric that I found that was from a fabric company online and I can't find it! Edit: I found it, search does work but it is tedious it was on page 5 of the search. Here is the link http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/catalog_itemdetail.aspx?ItmID=TC0651 for the cotton terry velour fabric. I am going to see about getting that. It sounds so soft. I do thank you for this forum, I have learned a great deal, and I hope to have helped some people along the way. We consumers have to find a way to find a comfortable sleeping surface. Mine was a DIY and I did save some money, but I also wasted some money on mattress pads, memory foam, and of course the S brand mattresses and Europa brand mattress. So I will never buy a traditional mattress again, and hope I can always purchase latex toppers, because in the end that is what worked for me. This message was modified May 28, 2010 by Leo3

How long ago was this, and how was the 2" topper described in the listing - was it the same "2" ECO luxury latex topper" listing they that they are using now? Reason I am curious, Overstock has sworn to me and others that the ECO luxury toppers they are now selling are talalay. But since they also say they are from Shri Lanka, and the biggest supplier there only does dunlap, there is reason to question whether the CS people at Overstock really know. I actually called them and explained my concerns, and asked if they could check and see if they weren't by any chance made by Latex Green, and was told they couldn't tell me the manufacturer, but the toppers really were talalay. As I have said before OS does not know! I also said this is a grab bag. If you are looking for a soft topper look elsewhere. For me it worked out, as bottom layers, and as a test sample of the 23ILD Latex International. They are selling various toppers and can't and will not guarantee what it is. Last time for me to post this. I am happy with what I purchased as I was looking for a grab bag apparently. Most of the pieces are LG because of the pictures Budgy posted of the LG pieces have strange holes because their molds are different (spikes) on each side. Also my LG labeled piece had the same holes, and my unmarked pieces were like that too. So most of their latex is dunlop. But I still am happy with the latex. Not everyone will be. One person here said she received a piece with a footmark on it. She returned it. Has CS ever known anything about their products? But for 97% of the time mine were quality pieces with a few flaws like most folks get. Remember OS is an liquidating outfit so that explains why they get many varied pieces. I was on a tight budget and I am satifisfied with my end result. Your results may vary. Good luck. This message was modified May 29, 2010 by Leo3

Good information, but you have not answered either of my questions - how long ago did you buy your latex from OS, and was it described then as E.C.O. Luxury Latex Topper, as the current stuff is, or by another description? It is possible, if you bought it some time ago, that they had another product altogether, under a different description, in which case it is possible that the stuff they are listing today is a different product. On the other hand, if you bought the same stuff they are listing now, recently, and they shipped dunlop, not talalay, then it is highly likely that buying from they is a crapshoot, and they don't have a clue what they are selling.

ok, thanks guys. I got the 3 inch latex for my daughters bed. It seemed just as good as SleepEz, even smelled the same, but not a strong odor. The only difference is, that some of the latex looks dirty. I don't get this?. Is this because it is all natural like they say, or did someone pee on it?. I'm gonna send them an email about this. They did agree to give me a discount since I was originally going to buy a 2" from OS. Maybe that is why I got a crappy piece of latex. But it did feel squishy and good, but my girls said it is firmer than SleepEz latex. I may have to return it for a soft instead of medium. |
leo3 - just wanted to add that I was on a 42 ild dunlop at long's bedding in nyc and though very firm, suited me. so while the softer dunlop from overstock may still be too firm for you, for some people with severe spine problems, the overstock dunlop might work. the firmness thing is so individual it is hard to gauge from one person to another. |

Just for the record, has anyone here managed to positively identify foambymails talalay as being really talalay?
I just ran into another instance of someone selling something they swore was talalay which appeared to be dunlop, so I am wondering if anyone knows the hell what they are selling. I notice they say it's 100% natural which is usually a tip off that a vendor is either selling dunlop, or is lying of misinformed about the 100% part. no, did not sleep on it overnight. salesman at Long's bedding told me it was a 42 dunlop. since this is a natural bedding store and they sell a lot of models with talalay on top, I trusted he knew his product. I will add that I found the beds with soft talalay on top to be much too soft for me. they felt like very soft memory foam and did not feel supportive enough. may work for other people, but did not work for me. hi, i'm new but have been reading for some time and have, unfortunately, been researching mattresses for about 4 months now and have yet to find the right mattress. as for overstock, i too was told that they were latex green ild 19 talalay. but i would imagine that they would have varying types/ilds depending on who their suppliers are at any given time. also, i have yet to get a clear answer about returns at overstock. does anyone know if one orders a topper, opens it, lays it out and lies down on it to see if it is comfortable, then if it is not, packages it up and sends it back, do they give a full refund? or do they only refund unopened toppers? thanks |

My FBM 1" latex topper arrived yesterday, along with a 1" soft PU topper that I included in the order just to get the free shipping.
The physical quality seems quite nice. The latex is smooth; holes uniform; no missing chunks; and it's relatively clean, except for two small black scuff marks. The color is not white, like other latex that I've seen. It's an off-white, kinda cappuccino-colored. The holes are kinda large. But, they are uniformly sized and spaced. Very little odor, hardly noticeable, especially compared to the horrendous chemical stench from new Tempur beds and pillows. There are no markings, writing, or branding on it. So, I have to take FBM's word that it is 100% natural talalay with an ILD of 20. Pretty nice value at $63 for twin XL. The 1" sheet of soft Poly is perfect, white, and clean, and cost around $18. (shipping on the latex topper woulda been $13, because the latex by itself was under $75. So, the net cost for this was $5) This message was modified Jun 25, 2010 by garypen

Ordered 2" topper nearly a year ago, very satisfied. Ordered one for wife, was supposed to be the same thing, wasn't. Took a lot of work to get my refund, custormer service doesn't exist. I believe they have either changed suppliers, or buy wherever they get a deal, because the one I bought for my wife was very soft (too soft). I was about to buy from overstock, but am having second thoughts. maybe a little gamble. I'll keep researching. |
Do a search and you will find some recent threads about this. OS doesn't ever actually touch the stuff, so they have no clue what they are selling. Even while the OS CSRs are promising talalay, the actual supplier sends whatever is available. When I asked for more detailed info from OS once the rep put me on hold then a few minutes later came back with my answer. I asked where she had found the info and she said she'd gone and read the customer reviews, and found it there! So instead of contacting the manufacturer to find out the definitive answer, she was telling me secondhand, unstubstantiated customer gossip! The good news is, she put it in writing, so when it turned out not to be accurate I was able to get OS pay for return shipping.
