Hi everyone. Now that I've decided to buy my new latex mattress online, I've gotten to thinking about my old mattress and how to get rid of it. Any tips / advice? I suppose I could throw it down in the basement for my kids to use as a trampoline...

I offered my old Sterns & Foster mattress and boxspring to a neighbor that was in need of a bed for her twin children.

It have been covered from day one with a waterproof mattress protector.

I would not buy a "used" bed from a stranger but if I knew the people and it was clean I would not have a problem.

I discovered a fantastic way to "recycle" items you no longer need but others might want.  It's called "Freecycle.com".   Members post items they want to GIVE away (not sell!) and others can email them to pick up the item.   I have given away everything from old mattress sets to a rabbit hutch.    It's hard to believe but there is someone for almost everything you want to get rid of.  I recently had over 30 requests for a daybed I wanted to move!    I rarely "take" anything, but did get some free concert tickets once.   Give it a try and help save your local landfill!

There are several freecycle groups within about 20 miles of my house here in New Hampshire.   I believe they operate countrywide.   All you need is a Yahoo user name and password to join a local group.  (Sponsored by Yahoo).

I listed mine under the "free" category of craigslist.  It was gone within 5 hours.

Good ideas. Thank you. Much better than renting a truck and dumping it in a landfill.
