I have an old memory foam topper that I am going to try out tonight to see if it softens my costco latex enough. Problem is, the old topper is queen and I have a king now, and it's too hot. But, if I like the feel of the 1" memory foam, what ILD in latex toppers should I look for? I definately want a softer feel. |
You would probably have to look for something in the mid-teens. Sleeplikeabear has the softest one at 14. I haven't come across any softer than that. Diane |
Memory foam is probably around 12-15ILD. The only thing I have seen that soft in 1" latex is at SLAB in Talatech or Celsion. Let us know how the 1" of queen memory foam works for you. |
If you have a Dunlop latex that feels too hard, my guess is that 1" of memory foam or soft Talalay is not going to be enough. Though I could be wrong. Maybe 1" of Talalay in a 14-22 and then a 1" memory foam might do it... Let us know. |
I didn't like the 1" of memory foam, but I doubled it up to 2 inches (I had cut my queen in half to put one on each of my sons' twin beds) and I have slept sooo much better on that. It's really comfortable now. So, do you think I will get the same feel with 2 inches of 19 ILD sold by Foam By Mail? They say it's Talalay, and it's only an hour from my house, so I plan to actually go there and see if I can pick out my piece after seeing it. I just don't know what to expect with a latex topper since I've never had one before. |
It will be a little firmer than the memory foam. So, you might be happy, or may find it slightly firmer than you want. The big risk is that it really is not 19 and is really something firmer than that. By the way, I see them list it as 20ILD on the website. If you can see it and feel it, then probably worth a shot. Not sure if you will be able to return it? 14-15 ILD from sleeplikeabear would probably be closer to your memory foam, but cost more. You could also just buy memory foam from Overstock, foambymail or some place like that. The Sensus is nice, but I find it can be too hot. Their mem-cool is cooler by not quite as dense. |
Costco's Nutratemp memory foam topper is about 14 ILD and does not sleep hot - this coming from someone who also tends to have heat issues. |
Diane, you have the NutraTemp? I was just at Costco today and saw it there. I liked the feel of it and the cover, but was afraid of it sleeping hot. That hasn't been your experience? |
Did you get too hot on the 2" memory foam you used? What kind is it? |
I just went and measured my memory foam. I think I must have had a 1.5 inch topper, because it's more like 3 inches than 2. So I think I will be good with the 3 inch from Costco. At least I can return it if it doesn't work out. I think it will be great for me, just wonder if DH is going to like it too. *sigh* I sleep a little hot on the MF right now, but Ikind of sleep hot on the latex as well. Hormones I guess. This has happened in the last 6 months. I got the current MF from Overstock years ago and don't know what kind it is. I have a 3" costco MF at my cottage and sleep fine on that. I wonder if the MF covers help at all with the heat? I don't have a cover on the MF I am using right now, but there is one on the cottage MF. This message was modified May 6, 2010 by Q119

Yes, the Nutratemp is 3". We have a Dormeir wool mattress pad on top of it. I'm only 107 lb and I don't sink in all that much. So, perhaps those 2 factors help with it not sleeping too warm. But my husband, who weighs more and sinks in more doesn't have any heat issues with it either. A few years back we spent a few nights at a B & B that had a tempurpedic - now that slept HOT - worse 3 nights of my life! I can say the Nutratemp is nothing like that awful experience. The thing about Costco is you can always take it back if it's not working for you. Diane |
