I went to Gardner mattress is Salem, MA and told them I was a stomach and side sleeper (equally). They suggested an inner-sping mattres (they're made without more than an inch of PU and are hand tied). The one they suggested was firm and felt good for stomach sleeping but there was another one there with 2" of latex which felt better on my side.
Im dealing with the typical Sleepy's mattress which has a huge crater in the entire mattress except the edges and I'm wondering if I get the Garnder mattress with the latex if that would break down too.
Should I start with the firmer Gardner mattress? Will it get softer which would be good? Or should I go with the one that feels better new - the one with the latex? I won't be performing "mattress surgery" so i need to make a good choice. Here's their link, it's the ones that are hand-tied. Thank you for any suggestions

I also bought my last mattress from Gardner Mattress recently and know about their product line. I ended up with one of their latex mattresses, had to do an exchange, add a layer, etc. In hindsight, my 2nd choice was the Ivory plush top I believe you are talking about with the latex layer on top. YES, I would recommend that choice rather than the PU foam model. Since they custom build each mattress, you could even speak to the owner "Gardner Sisk" (He is usually around the Salem store) and ask for a slightly firmer layer of latex on top. Be careful though, you don't want it too firm either. HINT....Gardner might even negotiate with you a little! Mark |
Mark, thanks - but I am asking about a regular mattress there VS the same mattress with 2" of latex. Also, I am asking about how to make that choice specifically for a stomach and side sleeper. (I weigh 125lbs).
Thanks.

PS Sorry if I sound mean - I'm EXHAUSTED! |
I don't see any other models in their line with a latex top other than the "Ivory plush top". Which model in their list are you talking about? (See your own link). I think all their mattresses have the same basic spring set other than the pocket coil type and latex. It's just the cover and padding that varies. |
Hi Mark!
Hey, thanks for your replies. I went there again yesterday. They have inner spring mattresses that are handmade with thick gague steel and are flippable. They last a long time. But they are too firm for a side sleeper. They have one with 1" of PU but I don't want to get into PU again. I could ask them to make me one of these with latex which would be ultimate I think, but above my price range. So I chose a pocket coil mattress with 2" of talaly latex. Like you said, it's really what's on top of the springs that matters. Of course it's not flippable. It's just soft enough for side sleeping and firm enough for stomach sleeping. I'm going there again tomorrow to lay on it again to be sure and buy it. I hope I made the right choice - I can't stand anymore hammocking beds. Do you think the pocket coil/latex will hold up for a number of years? This place also only sells real box springs. They're a big part of the price - something like $400. The mattress itself is about $1000. Not bad. Plus, they always give people 10% off. For anyone considering Gardner Mattress, ask for that discount if they don't offer it. thanks! I am not that familiar with pocket coil mattresses, but have read that they MIGHT breakdown a bit sooner than regular coils, In any event, I'm sure that whatever choice you make at Gardner Mattress, it will be a well made product and much better than any of the "S" brand mattresses. I think you are wise to avoid any PU foam and go with the latex. I had forgotten that their pocket coil mattress also had a top layer of latex. Good luck with your purchase and let us know how you like it after a while. |
a grand for a hard mattress with coils?, then only 2 inches of latex?. somebody got cheated. You could have just bought a firm cheap Serta at Big Lotts for $300, then put a $200 topper on it. Or went to Foambymail, and got an all natural Talaly Latex 6" core for under $500, and still added a softer talaly top layer for well under a grand. With SleepEz, you can unzip your mattress and know what's in it, and see all the wonderful layers of latex. I got one for $995. |
