wool topper too warm (?)
I gave in and got a new, lambswool topper to combat the heat that i feel from latex, memory foam, whatever is the top layer on the mattress! It feels so nice and cushy, but--and perhaps i am just nuts!--it feels very warm, and i've awakened sweating slightly and hot. Isn't wool supposed to be the great temperature regulator? Wondering if anyone has felt this... |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Eagle, thanks for the *kinder* reply. ;) I bought it from Overstock.com, and when i received it i googled the brand name (which doesn't appear on the overstock site, and which i can't remember now!) and it seems to be high quality. Here are the specs: Set the tone for a relaxing night of sleep with a lambswool mattress pad King-size mattress pad conforms to your body resulting in sound and refreshing sleep Bedding helps regulate your temperature keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter Deep pockets hold pad firmly in place Measures 78 inches wide x 80 inches long Features a pocket depth of 16 inches Pad has a 1 inch pile height Face: 100-percent superwash lambswool - The wool has been treated so it is machine washable Skirt: 65-percent polyester/35-percent cotton Machine washable Seems all good to me. ?? |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
I'm stumped. I have always heard that wool is great for being warm in winter and cool in summer. I've had wool mattress pads before and have always been pleased with their performance. |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Jocelyn: One thought that occurred to me is, what did the topper cost? The topper that I have looked at in the past is this topper by SnugFleece. About the best price I have found, from a reputable location, is $288.00 for a California King. Here is the URL, go to this site and compare yours to this one. http://www.neweggmall.com/Product/2002521910010/productdetail.html?quantity=1 Let us know what you think. |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Thanks for the link. I did look at Snugfleece before buying this one (about $190 retail, $160 on overstock), and i can't really see much difference...I've heard of wool toppers having too much polyester in them, but this one seems to be 100% lambswool, nothing else. Hmmm. I'll see if it continues to be hot, and report back. Thank you! |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Are you sleeping on top of the topper or do you have sheets over the topper? If the sheets are synthetic, maybe the wool is insulating but the sheets are not allowing the 'breathing' to occur? I don't have any personal experience with a wool topper and synthetic sheets, just tossing out what came to mind after reading your post. |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
I am curious about the name of the topper. What is it? Does the company that manufactures the topper have a website that I can visit? This message was modified Oct 12, 2009 by eagle2

Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Hi Electracat, I use a wool topper on my latex bed. I have tried it both with and without the wool topper, and much prefer it with for regulating the temperature. For me it definitely makes a huge difference. Even though I tend to run cold (with a ow body temp), I noticed I was waking up hot and a bit sweaty even sometimes, when I was sleeping just on the latex bed without it. Mine is very old and from Canada 20+ years go. It's the kind that is strands of 2" or so wool fleece hooked to a wool backing, not the kind that is wool fleece inside a cotton cover. If you aren't familiar with this kind, it looks kinda like a shag rug. Anyway, I love it, whether I'm sleeping with light blankets or with a down duvet, which I am currently. Does make the bed feel ever so slightly firmer (to me) which is fine. i use either all cotton sheets (NOT with a super high thread count; apparently those don't breathe as well) or cotton/bamboo sheets, which re even cooler in the summer. Does it feel "less" hot with the wool topper than without? This message was modified Oct 12, 2009 by twalkman

Re: wool topper too warm (?)
http://wovenartandbeyond.com/the-denali-downunder-lambswood-sleeper.html Thanks for the help. I think it's actually warmer *with* the pad than without it...I also think i must be nuts! It's not contained within a cotton cover, but looks like a fleece, probably similar to the one Linda has. Lovely and soft, but not sure it's working for me. We'll see! Anyone have experience with 'Outlast' material on mattress pads? Supposed to be cooling...though it would probably warm me up! ;) |
Re: wool topper too warm (?)
Thanks for the URL. It looks like a quality mattress cover to me. But you know, I have just never completely bought into the idea that wool can be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Without any personal experience you can't help but believe that they must be telling the truth, why would they lie? Maybe they stretch the truth a little bit because most of these toppers are usually pretty expensive, I have been told that a lot of them are sold by the dealers at double the price they pay for them. I am talking about the full manufactured suggested retail price here, not the discounted price we so often see. I normally sleep in my bedroom at between 70 and 76°F. In the winter turning on the furnace to keep the temperature in this range, and in the summertime running the air conditioner to do the same thing. So far by sleeping directly on the FloBeds mattress with only a very thin protective mattress cover and a low count cotton sheet over it, I am having no difficulties. We'll just have to wait and see what the summer brings. FloBeds does have apx. a 3/4 inch thick wool batting in their mattress cover. I have had no sweating problems that I'm aware of..... so far. In any event, I hope it all works out successfully for you. This message was modified Oct 13, 2009 by eagle2
