I am considering purchasing a full size Simmons World Class Paris plush firm.  My partner and I are 5'4" 100lbs and 5'8" 150 lbs respectively and both sleep either on our sides or backs.  We both have tried it in store and it seems comfortable.  I have been trying to read throughout all of the information in this forum about brands, mattress life, coil strength, etc.  In regards to this particular mattress and brand I am wondering if this mattress would be worth the purchase.  I am willing to spend about $1500 for my new mattress so any other suggestions on similar brands/models in the that price range would be appreciated.  Because of it being a full size that I need, would the degradation process of either the foam or springs be the same in relation to length of time compared to a queen or king size of the same model?  I am asking this because I saw it mentioned on one of the threads in this forum.

One more question.  Comparing the springs in Simmons. Sealy, Stearns and Foster and Serta, which company has the best quality springs when comparing similar catagories (good, better, best)?  I just discovered this forum about a few weeks ago and I find it very informative.  Thank you for any feedback you have.  I appreciate it.

(Sorry for making this a bit convoluted)

This sounds like a question for Alex. If he's still around?
Please try messaging him if he doesn't respond. He's the "regular" mattress expert around here.

As a person who thinks MOST S brand mass-produced mattresses are junk, I always say this:
Buy a FIRM model and add your own toppers. "Pillowtop" usually means cheap PU foam which will break down or break in very rapidly leading to non-support.
IF you do buy a pillowtop, find out what the pillowtop is made of. If it's anything other than the highest quality high-density 4-5lb memory foam or latex then it WILL break down too rapidly and you'd have to cut into your mattress in order to replace it.
IMHO.

My husband and I bought a Simmons Dorinda Plush Firm Queen about 3 weeks ago. I have no idea how it compares to the model you mentioned, but the Dorinda Plush Firm is ruining my life*. When it first arrived I thought it seemed way harder than the one in the showroom. I think the showroom one softened up by so many people crawling in and out of it. I could barely eek out 3 hours of sleep on it at first. Now, within only 3 weeks - there are permanent depressions made by our bodies - and my husband and I are of average weight and build. It's ridiculous. I'm sleeping in a gully and only getting 3-4 hours of sleep per night.

*I am currently in the middle of trying to heal from a herniated disc - L/4-L/5, which is contributing to my lack of sleep. However, I feel if I had the right mattress I would be getting more sleep and healing faster.

Dear Bedhater:
Welcome aboard.  You have many many kindred spirits here!  I hate how beds do that, been there, done that way too many times.
To: fubu04, what seems to happen with beds is that they are filled with foam that breaks down fairly quickly, as in the above case.  Best thing, IMO, to do is make sure you are buying a bed with a good base(whatever you like, personally I like springs, offset coils work for me), a good insulator layer over this(to keep the springs under the softer top layer), and on top of that, a minimal layer of softness.  Things that seem to work and last are cotton batting, latex, some memory foams (but only as part not the whole filler), but NOT a lot of p/u foam because that is what breaks down.
Typical mattresses these days seem to have little to no insulator layer, no cotton batting, and their softness comes from layers of cheap p/u foam.  This breaks down and creates valleys where you sleep...then your low back will hurt because there is no support underneath...you are sleeping on so much soft foam that you are no where near the springs!
I took apart my pillowtop bed once.  Inside, from the factory, were marshall coils(pocket coils), and over that was glued, directly, to two thick layers of super soft p/u foam, then a pillow top of more p/u foam. That bed hurt my back from day one.  I replaced foam, moved foam, added insulator layer, but it never did sleep right.  Gave it to the kids.
You need to be very concerned about what is inside your bed.  I recommend if possible going to a nice hotel and sleeping on their beds until you find what is good for you.  I found the coils I like and the bed type that suits me by doing that, purely by accident.  However, I was able to come home and have a bed made(for about 1/4 the retail cost of the name brand)with quality components, that I am still enjoying.  Normally, I hate my new beds by three months, with a valley and a sore back.  It has been almost a year, and I'm good with this one.
