Help with replacing comfort layer please!

You could get an inch of "super soft foam" from FBM. Not too long-lasting, but only like $20.

Latex Mattress - All Latex or foam base?

I am a DIY guy, using FBM products. I used their high-quality LUX-HQ and HD36-HQ polyurethane foams for my core, *even though* I actually had a 6" latex core (of unknown type and ILD) from an old mattress I disassembled.

oh-so-confused... help for new mattress purchase - foam/latex/traditional?

Budget-conscious is to DIY with products from foambymail (aka. FBM in these forums) and others. I think it's also the best way (I can easilty afford the more expensive non-DIY setups), since you can incrementally experiment with layers.

    FBM Base core

I used 3" of LUX-HQ and then 3" of HD36-HQ on top of that. With MF and latex toppers on top (zoned, see my other postings).

    FBM 4lb vs 5lb

MF is said not to be good for lower-back pain; let's your butt sag down too much. I did zoning, with 20ILD FBM latex under the hip area (it's really firmer than 20, most say) and 4lb MF under shoulders and all. I like it, but butt area still feels too firm, so have a piece of super-soft I'm...

Please help me choose- queen or king!

Unless you're a huge dude, I'd stick with the queen. I like a roomy bed, but a queen is fine for me. A big caveat would be unless you see three-ways in your future - the a king is probably worthwhile.

Am I Crazy to Try This?

So am I crazy to think about trying a bed that's 100% conventional foam with no memory foam or latex? My understanding is that conventional foam wears out quicker than latex or memory-foam, but FBM claims their -HQ grade is good for 12-18 years, and as cheap as it is compared to latex and MF...

    foambymail latex durability and firmness

latexfan wrote: the reason I am asking is that I went to a local vendor and he showed me a latex mattress. he sells 6" latex (firm 40 ILD )+ 3" latex( 30-35 ILD). He describes it as firm. He also sells 6" latex (firm 40-45 ILD )+ 3" latex( 40-45 ILD) and he describes it as extra firm. I...

    foambymail latex durability and firmness

They have a 50ILD conventional foam product called LUX. LUX-HQ (the "high quality" version) is rated (supposedly) for 12-18 years. I don't know if you really want to sleep directly on something that firm, but if not, you could put a latex or memory-foam topper of some sort over it. Hope...

Need advice on making DIY Foam by Mail bed firmer

jeff8407 wrote: I do not think the cover has anything to do with the problems you are having. I have a bamboo cover, a terrycloth cover, and a wool cover that have all been used on the same foam mattress and the mattress changes very, very little due to the cover. I think your friends...

    FBM's terrycloth cover

Sall wrote: Here is where I bought mine. They are very nice and have plenty of stretch room on the sides. They will cover all four sides completely. I highly recommend them. http://snuggledown.com/s/catalog/st_geneve/st_dormeir_wool_mattress_protectors/ Wow, they ARE expensive though. How...

What would be a good choice for me??

I have one word for you: zoning ! At least that's what this side-sleeper, with issues much like yours, seems to think is the answer for him at this point. The idea is firm under your butt, so it doesn't sink too low and make your back hurt (as your back muscles struggle to keep your spine...

    FBM's terrycloth cover

Catherine wrote: You might not need the terry-cloth cover for the toppers then -- just a mattress pad or protector of some kind that covers everything and protects the latex. If you do get the terry-cloth cover, though, I doubt that it will shift much. The bottom of it has little nubs all...

    FBM's terrycloth cover

Thanks Catherine. My current plan is for 2" of toppers, and I doubt I'll add more than an inch beyond that, so I think the 3" will be fine. I'm a little worried now though. In my experiments with zoning, I am having ZERO problem with gaps forming between the adjoining pieces of foam. I...

    FBM's terrycloth cover

Anyone have experience with FBM's terry-cloth cover: http://www.mattressbymail.com/terrycover.html I am thinking of using one istead of a mattress pad. Because I have 3 (and possibly later 4) layers on foam in my bed, a regular mattress pad seems to be problematic. When I try to stretch it...

    lovin' zoning

Ok, I'm experimenting with a different twist on zoning ... I'm still using a piece of FBM 20ILD latex, 1" folded double for the lower 2/3 or so of the bed. But for the head/shoulder area, I am using a scrap of 2" memory foam I found. I think I like it - sorta the best of both worlds - the...

    lovin' zoning

Yeah, Custom Sleep Design's tool is cool, but their prices are amazing - I was quoted $3425 for a queen. I can buy, test, and even discard a lot of latex layers from FBM and others and still be well below that. My main problem is finding latex soft enough for the shoulder area (and maybe for...
