Re: Dare I say that most mattress sales people are less than good at their job? New buyers: what to expect in your mattress quest - jimsocal

Hi Jim - You may want to look at Original Mattress Factory. They have mattresses with 12.5 gauge springs. They are very upfront about what's in their mattresses, and have a website with all the info. In their stores they have cut outs of what's inside each one. The 12.5 gauge springs were too firm for my taste, but I imagine they are very long lasting.
Hi, I was surprised to see this thread. Just so you all know this thread was dug up from almost 2 years ago!
I am quite sure the Englander springs I have were 12.5 gauge. Yes some companies do use 12.5 gauge springs though nowadays here in 2011 most companies are using pocket coils from 14-15 gauge.
I am actually very interested in trying some of the new pocket...
Original Mattress Factory buying experience - twalkman

I just bought an innerspring mattress for a pull down bed (Murphy) that we use for guests. It will only be lightly used so I didn't want to buy a high end mattress.. The bed build using the "create-a-bed" mechanism requires that the mattress be less than 12" tall.
At one time I had a latex mattress from foam-by-mail in the bed, but contrary to what someone at sleep like a bear told me, it did not work in a murphy bed because it would tend to slide and bunch when the bed was raised. I eventually cut that mattress down and moved it to one of my kid beds.
During online search I came across Original Mattress Factory which I was familiar with from advertising. They had a nice website and several locations around me. I wanted to take the mattress home with me so...

How many people can say that?! I wanted Original Mattress Factory's Orthopedic Ultra Firm. Still want that, and might buy it later. For now, I needed an ultra firm innerspring with little padding. Didn't want to spend the $950 or so to get the OMF set in queen with split box spring until I move to more permanent digs.
Bought: Therapedic "Happiness" firm 1-sided queen size mattress, #08-00055 manufactured 12/19/08, Therapedic, Orwell OH 44076
This was a new mattress, queen size, that was sitting around in a furniture store. It's single-sided, but I only paid $350 for it, so I'll compromise.
Pros:
ultra firm feel
really great edge stiffening, and I do mean great
motion dampening is acceptable; not much shimmy; motion is dampened fast
not much foam in it
cover is attractive...

I'm in NW PA. I like a really ultra firm mattress. The two current models that I liked the best are Imperial Bedding #640 (Huntington, WV), and Original Mattress Factory (several factories but probabably not any in TX) Orthopedic Ultra Firm with the edge supports. What I ended up buying is a discontiuned Therapedic (Orwell, OH) single sided that I got for only $350 brand new in queen size. It is extra firm and has about the same ultra firm feel as the OFM set. The store told me that the set had originally sold for $800. (The mattress I bought was made in 2008, and probably didn't sell just because it is so firm and the older population here goes for the pilow tops.) The OMF set was going to be $949 + $50 delivery for the set with a split box. The Imperial set would have been about...

Another thing that they do is build hinged mattresses in any size. Hinged so that they fold and can fit through smaller spaces. ALL of the king mattresses are hinged, and there is no extra charge to hinge any other size. You can also get a split box spring in any size, for added cost.
For flammability reasons, they have restricted the amount and type of customizations they will do to specific models now. As it was explained to me, each and every configuration has to be government-tested for flammability, and OMF has thus elected to standardize on certain configurations. One feature that bit the dust as a result of this was the double row of foam cylinder edge supports that they used to offer.
There is no price haggling. The price is the price. No cash discount, either. They only way to get it for...

After purchasing from the Original Mattress factory, the sales rep lead me on to beleive that many retails look for an edge in selling the ones they have. I thought about and when I purchased my memory foam topper online, the owner of the online retailer, expressed the same feelings. Both were clear that it is a rough industry. Find a good company, or retailer and you will clearly see the difference between a sales person and a business person. I found that both of the retailers I purchased from were not anything like used car salesman at all. They had a clear focus of their products as well as good idea about the industry they work in and did not want to be that way. Sometimes price leads to a ugly company and yucky salespeople, however, it doesn't have to. Between original mattress factory and driftawaymattress, I can atest...
Looking for an inexpensive replacement mattress - 77Pat

I am starting my search for a new mattress. My current mattress is around 10 years old (Simmons Back Care Entre) and I am starting to feel the springs when I sleep. I have flipped and rotated the mattress and still feel them.
I do not know how long I plan to keep this mattress since right now I am living with my parents, but depending on job situation might move out in a year. When I move I plan to invest in a more expensive mattress (Sleepez/Flobed/maybe Carpe Diem, Vi Spring, or Hastens) and the mattress I buy now would be for when I visit.
I weigh around 150 pounds and usually sleep on my stomach or side. I just want to get something that will help me get better quality sleep.
Right now I am mainly looking at:

Another DIY Latex Bed from FBM - SleepLikeADog

Hi everyone, medium term lurker here who finally registered to ask for feedback on a DIY design. I found WhatsTheBest forum several months ago while searching for general information and buying advice on latex beds and was floored at the quantity of information to consider.
There are few decisions more subjective than a mattress. I'm 50 years @ 225 lbs and prefer a firmer mattress, my wife is 46 years @ 145 lbs with slight Scoliosis that doesn't cause her any pain and she prefers a softer mattress. The good news is we're easy to please as we've been sleeping on a 10 year old Stearns & Foster flippable pillow-top queen without (much) complaint.
Any of the high rated custom shops like Flo-Beds, Custom Sleep Design, Sleep EZ, SLAB, Arizona Premium Mattress, etc would be safe to buy from. Outstanding customer service comes at a price...
